1. Carrying Your Wife over burning coal.
While not wholly specific to China, an
interesting traditional Chinese custom says that
a husband should carry his wife over a pan of
burning coals before crossing the threshold of
their home as husband and wife.

According to tradition, the ritual ensures that the
wife will have an easy and successful labor.

2. Living With the Dead
The Toraja people of Indonesia practice a truly singular ritual of exhuming the corpses of their fellow villagers. But it doesn’t end there: The corpse is draped in special garments and paraded around the village. Even the bodies of children and bodies that are decades old are exhumed.

The ritual is mainly carried out in order to clean the corpses, their garrments, and coffins, and to ceremonially return the corpses to their home village. That is, if someone died outside the village, the corpse will be taken to the spot of death, then walked back to the village, as an act of returning home.

3. Bullet Ant Gloves

The most painful Initiation Ritual – For the Satere-Mawe tribe of the Amazon, you can’t become a man if you don’t take part in this ritual. When a young boy becomes sexually mature he goes out into the jungle with the Medicine man and other boys his age to find and gather bullet ants. The insect with the most painful sting in the world. The sting from these ants has been compared to a bullet hitting the flesh.

Te boys will gather the ants and the ants are then drugged by some herbs given to them by the Medicine Man. Later, while the ants are sleeping in their drug induced state, they are placed into a woven mesh glove with the stinger on the inside. When the ants wake up they find themselves trapped and become very angry and aggressive. The boys must put on the gloves and keep them on for about ten minutes while they do a dance to take their mind off the pain. Do you know the most shocking part of it all? here it is "the young men of the Satere-Mawe tribe must endure this pain 20 times before they can prove they are men".

4. Self-Flagellation

Shiite Muslims are well known for their martyrdom, and Ashura is no exception. Ashura is an event
recognized by many Muslims around the world for various reasons. For some Shiites, the day is observed in commemoration of the death of Imam
Hussein, a grandson of the prophet Muhammad, at the 7th century battle of Karbala. Hussein, along with his comrades, was repeatedly struck on the head with daggers.

Today, select men join a procession and flagellate themselves with daggers to the head, among other means, in order to pay tribute and absolve sin; people spill their own blood and those of their relatives to mourn the fact that they were not being present to
save Hussein.

5. Burial Ritual Yanomami

Rituals are a very important part of Yanomami
culture. Funeral rituals for dead relatives is very important in Yanomami tribe (Venezuela and Brazil), the people of this tribe want to to ensure peace for the souls of dead person. When a Yanomami dies, his body is burned. The ash and bone powder is mix into a plantain soup. His people then drinks the plantain soup consisting of the dead person’s ash and bone.

They believe that by ingesting the remains of a love one, his spirit will live within them forever.Every body must be cremated, because the Yanomami think that leaving a dead body to decay is horrifying. In addition, the soul will be unhappy if he couldn’t find a resting place in the bodies of his loved ones.

A dead body must be dispose of as soon as possible, because the soul may come back and haunt the remaining ones.

6.

The Famadihana is a traditional festival which is celebrated in both urban and rural areas of the country especially in Madagascar; it is more popular among the tribal communities.
It is a funerary tradition, known as the turning of the bones, people bring forth the bodies of their ancestors from the family crypts and rewrap them in fresh cloth, then dance with the corpses around the tomb to live music.

In Madagascar this became a regular ritual usually once every seven years, and the custom brings together extended families in celebrations of kinship.

Actually it is occasion to give respect to the dead relative through the transfer of the bones to a permanent place of abode. The families of the razana contribute funds all year to celebratethe festival. The burial tomb is constructed; it is considered that it will place a link between the dead and the living.

The relatives of the dead dress well, go to the tomb, to see the remains of the deceased relatives and friends, all closed persons are invited to this event.People and relatives sing traditional songs and dance. The main motive behind the festival originated from the belief of the localpeople that the dead return to God and are reborn.

7. Baby Throwing in India

The bizarre and very strange ritual of throwing newborn babies off a temple 50ft high and catching them in a cloth has been celebrated in India since last 500 years. It is practised by couples who are blessed with a child after taking a vow at the Sri Santeswar temple near India, in the state of Karnataka.

The ritual is observed by both Muslims and Hindus every year and takes place amid tight security.

The ritual takes place in the first week of December, and is believed to bring health, prosperity and luck to new arrivals. Around 200 babies are dropped by their parents every year while crowds sing and dance. Most of the infants are under two years old.

7. he Mourning of Muharram

This an important period of mourning in ShiaIslam, taking place in Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. Itis also called the Remembrance of Muharram. Many of the events associated with the remembrance take place in congregation halls known as Hussainia.

The event marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala when Imam Hussein ibn Ali (R.A), the grandson of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W), and a Shia Imam, was killed by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I.
The event reaches its climax on the tenth day morning, known as Ashura. Some groups of Shia Muslims join in an ardous practice that involves body whipping with special chains that have razors and knives attached. This tradition is practiced by all age groups; in some regions the children are forced by their parents to take part.

This custom is observed by the people of Iran, Bahrain, India, Lebanon, Iraq and Pakistan

8. The gruesome cutting off fingers

The death of a family member in the Dani tribe of Indonesia heralds a vast amount of emotional and, for women, physical pain. Aside from the inevitable emotional grief, women of the Dani tribe physically express that grief by cutting off (by compulsion) a
segment of one of their fingers.

Before being amputated, the fingers are tied with a string for thirty minutes to numb them. Once
amputated, the new fingertips are burned to create new scar tissue. This custom, one of the world’s most
bizarre cultural practices, is performed as a means to satisfy ancestral ghosts, and is rarely, but still sporadically, practiced in the tribe.

9. France’s toilet tradition

In a weird, wonderful, yet utterly gross fashion, French newlyweds were made to drink the leftovers from their wedding party out of a toilet bowl. Yuk! so don’t be surprised if you come across the bride and groom supping on chocolates and champagne served out of a replica toilet bowl. In French nowadays this particular tradition barely exist.

12. The Trobriand tribe: A place where kids below 8 are allowed to have sex.

The Trobriand tribe is one among the over 840 tribes in Papua New Guinea.
The Trobriand tribe practices magic spells and passes them down through generations, often directing their spells to induce erotic feelings in their lover or to make a person beautiful.
The beauty spells are chanted into coconut oil and then rubbed onto a person's skin.

Also, the tribe is known for becoming sexually active at a young age. Girls often start having sex by the age of 6 to 8, while boys start at 10 to 12, with no social stigma.
Another interesting titbit, while pre-marital sex is fine, pre-marital meal-sharing is not. Couples are not supposed to go out for dinner together until they are married but they can have sex before marriage.

13. The sambian tribe: A tribe where boys below 12 are forced to drink the semen of elders

The Sambian tribe's sexual practices are more extreme than their Trobriand neighbors. Boys from Sambian society are removed from the presence of females at the age of seven, living in a community of only males for 10 years.

Their skin is pierced to remove "contamination" brought upon by interaction with women, and they consume large amounts of sugarcane to incur nose-bleeding and vomiting.

They drink the semen of their elders to retain growth, strength, and sexual potency, and when they are reintroduced to society, they continue their nose-bleeding habit to mirror their wives' menstrual cycle.

This particular tradition is a a bit too extreme. so, for the faint of heart, turn away now.

The Mardudjara Aborigines of australia shocking traditions

The Mardudjara Aborigines of Australia have one of the most shocking boyhood-to-manhood transformations out there.
At the age of 10 or 12, a boy has his front tooth knocked out and his septum pierced. He is considered symbolically dead at this point, and then he is taken into the wilderness by other men, circumcised, and then expected to ingest his foreskin without chewing. He is mute throughout the entire process.

Then his penis is cut lengthwise on the underside, He is the instructed to sit on a smoking fie for nothing less than an hour, the blood is dripped over the smoking fire to purify it, and from then on the male urinates from the underside of his penis.

Then all of the men go hunting, return to camp with food and covered in blood, and the boy is considered reborn as an adult male.

according to Jens,
‘Nearly all the children are blonde, but become dark as they grow older'.

15. The female Genital mutilation(FGM).

This is one of the oldest traditions still in practice till date by so many tribes across the globe.
Studies show that Africa has the greatest amount of FGM, as the World Health Organization believes that somewhere between 100 million and 140 millon women and girls about have undergone the surgery throughout the world, 92 million of them over the age of ten living in Africa.

Female Genital Mutilation has been outlawed in Britain, Canada, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States.

The following two maps show the percentages of women and girls in Africa from the ages of 15-49 who have undergone a FGM surgery. (picture 1)

Types of FGM

There are three general types of FGM that a woman can have done to her. Girls anywhere from infancy to adulthood can have this practice done in any of the three types.

1.Sunna Circumcision (Type I)- The tip of a woman's clitoris is shaved or cut off. The word "sunna" refers to Muhammed's early tradition of the practice. This form of Female Genital Mutilation can be found in many countries in both East and West Africa, and countries in the Middle East. ( picture number 2)

2.Clitoridectomy (Type II)- This form of Female Genital Mutilation involves the partial or even entire removal of a woman's clitoris, as well as the woman's labia. Clitoridectomies most often occur in places where Infibulation (or Type III) has been banned. (picture 3)

3. Infibulation or Pharaonic Circumcision (Type III)- This most drastic form of FGM is the removal of the clitoris and labia, with the remaining skin streched across the vagina from both sides and stitched together with either thread, thorns or catgut. This leaves only a small opening through which the woman can urinate, and which menstural blood can come through. A woman with this third form of FGM has her previously sewn shut vagina opened as to allow her to have intercourse with her new husband, and then has it sewn back up in order to ensure that she is loyal to her husband. 16. Kotsuage In Japan

As part of the Japanese funeral, 99.8% of the people are cremated after death. And after the cremation, family members gather around the ashes and bones of their deceased loved ones and place the bones in an urn with chopsticks. They begin with the feet and end with the head, so that the deceased aren’t upside down.
And it’s the only time it’s socially acceptable to pass something from chopstick to chopstick, known as kotsuage, because at all other times, it’s extremely rude to do such because it reminds everyone of the death of a loved one. The urns are then buried.

17. Crucifixion In The Philippines

One of the devotional practices held every Good Friday as part of the local observance of Holy Week in the Philippines is Crucifixion.
Penitents and devotees are willingly crucified in imitation of Jesus Christ’s suffering and death; other related practices are carrying of the wooden crosses, crawling on rough pavement, and self-flagellation.

Penitents considered these acts to be mortification of the flesh, and undertake these to ask forgiveness for sins, to fulfil a panatà (Filipino, “vow”), or to express gratitude for favours granted.

18. Sherpa Women are allowed to take Multiple Husbands

Polyandry is practiced by Sherpa women which involves marriage that includes more than two partners refers to sexual relations with multiple males within or without marriage.
This is mostly practiced in societies with very few resources, where one woman is or can be married to multiple husbands who are actually brothers. It also serves as a woman’s protection in case something happens to any of her husbands.

An interesting fact: while Polyandry is a common practice in Nepal among the Sherpas, Polygamy is prohibited.
