LPG Conversions:

We are frequently asked about the various LPG (Butane) conversion values.
People ask the questions in many ways and the simplest way to answer most of them is to explain in details below:

Unlike water, 1kg of LPG does NOT equal 1L of LPG. This is because the density or specific gravity of LPG is less than water.

You can convert:
LPG kg to litres (1kg = 1.75L)
LPG Litres to kg (1L = 0.75kg)
LPG Tons to Kg (1ton=1000kg)

So to convert a 12.5kg cylinder to litres, it is calculated to be:
12.5kg X 1.75L (standard conversion rate)= (21.9 litres)

to convert a 2500kg worth of gas Litres (for plant owners), it is calculated to be:
2500kg X 1.75L = 4375 Litres

Note: LPG pressure vessels (tanks and cylinders) are recommended internationally to be filled to 85% capacity, this is to give room for the expansion of the gas when the temperatures are high.

hoebamaa:
You took those words out of my mouth.

Let me run you through the cost breakdown.

1. Sighting of business location: 100,000 it is optional though (if you have a location, you don't need to pay this fee)

2. Cost of the business location: All the stations we partnered it, we have a maximum threshold fee of NGN500,000 including agency and agreement fees (it could be lower but not higher depending on the location)

3. Certification of the plant: DPR add-on certificate costs NGN300,000 per location.

4. Cost of equipment and all business accessories: it depends on the size of the equipment you are going for; the plant + all the equipments needed to run the business which also includes management tools (laptop+modem) and a DPR pressure test, calibration test and facility integrity test certificate is

● 2.5tonnes mini plant: N4.5miliion to N8.5million

● 5 tonnes mini plant: N7million to N12.5million

● 10tonnes stationary plant: N14million to N20million

So let us take a scenario of a typical new entrant into the sector.

Step 1 :feasibility study and sighting of business location; NGN100,000 (for lagos locations)

Step 2: Rental fees for the business location; NGN500,000 per annum maximum

Step3: DPR certification for the location; NGN300,000

Step4: Setting of of business equipment; most of the time the entrepreneurs like to start small with the 2.5tons plant which is NGN4,500,000

Total: 100,000+500,000+300,000+4,500,000

Amount: 5,400,000

Note: it depends on the size of the equipment you decide to go with and the only additional cost you will incur will be procuring the product (LPG)

The LPG industry in Nigeria has a value of 37billion Naira with less than 10% already being harnessed.

Nigeria is at that point we were in the 1970's when the populace made a massive switch from firewood to kerosene stoves because it was the

most convenient domestic fuel at that time.

As you walk across Nigeria today, you will observe a new trend of LPG plants popping up all around especially in petroleum filling stations and

small land spaces and many write-ups are littered across the internet about the LPG industry, this is as a result of many individuals that are

shifting from kerosene and other fossil fuels to using cooking gas. The major challenge for the old and new consumers of gas is the fact that

the gas plants are not close enough for them which creates a vacuum which entrepreneurs can take advantage of and create value in the sector

by bring gas closer to the consumers.

Re: Nigerian Cooking Gas Business Unveiled by kiakiagas: 8:56pm On Jun 01, 2016
LPG market is one of the fastest growing markets in Nigeria. Apart from its economic benefits, the roles that LPG utilization plays in environmental sustainability can never be overemphasized. Most countries including Nigeria have been tasked with the responsibility of cutting down on their carbon emission and invest in clean and renewable energy sources, such as LPG, solar energy, wind turbines and biofuel. In Nigeria however, LPG is the most available and viable clean energy source as the proven natural gas (LPG feedstock) reserve is twice as big as the crude oil reserve. Hence, more businesses will be stimulated across the LPG value chain in the coming years as the Nigerian government continues to formulate LPG-friendly energy policies in tandem with the recommendations of global environmental stakeholders such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).

Be a part of the next big thing...Invest in LPG business today for a secured tomorrow!

Re: Nigerian Cooking Gas Business Unveiled by kiakiagas: 12:52pm On Jun 03, 2016
Good morning budding entrepreneurs.

Questions usually arise with respect to the safety of an LPG skid plant in a given location. People are often discouraged to own and operate LPG skid plants mostly due to the explosive nature of the gas which might be perceived as a threat to lives and properties. However, there are cogent and verifiable reasons why these concerns should not discourage you from owning and operating an LPG skid plant in any location of your choice.

1. Before an LPG skid plant can be sited and installed in a given location, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) must carry out a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in accordance with the international best standard, followed by calibration test, pressure test and facility integrity test to ascertain the safety compliance limit of the LPG infrastructure. A DPR certificate is issued once all the necessary standards are met.

2. An LPG skid plant comes with a Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) which serves as a vent for built-up pressure. Under a high external temperature (due to a nearby fire incident for instance), the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) releases the excess pressure fast to prevent the rupturing of the vessel (tank or cylinder).

3. An LPG skid plant has a wall thickness of about 15cm. This serves as a fire and pressure resistance, preventing the rupturing of the vessel (tank and cylinder) under a high and prolonged fire incidence.

4. In accordance with international best standard, an LPG skid plant is filled up to about 85% capacity in order to provide enough space for the thermal expansion of the contained gas when the surrounding temperature increases.

In the light of the aforementioned facts, investment in the growing LPG market is the most prudent decision anyone can make, especially as the LPG market in Nigeria is worth over #37 billion annually with about 50% return on investment.

Do you know?

Gas leakages in pressure vessels (cylinders and tanks) can be easily detected through an odorant called Ethanethiol. Ethanethiol is mixed

in a very small quantity with the LPG so that leaked gas can easily be perceived. This will help in preventing fire hazards.

Re: Nigerian Cooking Gas Business Unveiled by kiakiagas: 1:59pm On Jun 05, 2016
Do you know?

LPG (cooking gas) is composed of two major components, Propane and Butane, with trace amounts of other substances such as butylene, propylene, methane and water.

In warm tropical regions such as Nigeria, it is highly recommend that the Propane fraction of the LPG is minimal, usually below 50% of the total volume of the gas. This is due to the explosive nature of the Propane under high tropical temperature compared to the less explosive Butane.

Good morning budding entrepreneurs!

Nigeria is a land of opportunities. This might seem like a cliche...but it's not...it's a FACT.

There are many investment opportunities in the country despite the current economic downturn. Yet, there is one line of business that promises up to 50% return on investment...

LPG (cooking gas) is hurriedly becoming the leading domestic and industrial energy source in Nigeria, with the potential of generating over #37 billion annually. With a 4 million naira investment in an LPG skid plant, you can make a profit of over #600,000 monthly. This might be the financial breakthrough you have been waiting for.

Things to look out for when looking for a location to set up your LPG facility..

1. The location should not be sighted under an electric power line

2. It should be at least 200 metres away from a canal or river or any water bodies as the case maybe.

3. It should be at least 2 plots of land for a standard plant and 20 by 30 ft for a mini skid plant.

4. It should be situated at least 1000 feet away from residential buildings.

Aside all of this, the quality of installation and equipment for your facility is important, you are advised to use DPR registered installers for your facility.

Are you still scared of switching from kerosene to LPG (cooking gas)?

Many people are discouraged to use LPG (cooking gas) for keeping due to its explosive nature. However, a simple and basic procedure can be followed to forestall gas leakage and its effect.

1. In case of a suspected gas leakage, DO NOT verify with matches or lighter as this can ignite a fire outbreak.

2. Dissolve a few quantity of detergent (or soap) in water.

3. Apply a small quantity of the soapy solution on the cylinder valve opening.

4. Bubbles will be formed if there's a gas leakage.

5. If the valve cannot be completely closed, DO NOT attempt to 'fix' it yourself...call an expert.

With a conservative projection of 1000kg (80 12.5kg cylinders) sales per week
1 ton storage fills 80 12.5kg cylinders.
80 x 4weeks= 320 12.5kg cylinders per month
At a standard filling rate of N2800 per 12.5kg cylinder gives N896,000 per month. (Lagos Price)

At the current landing cost of gas from the depot (lagos location) of N2,200 per 12.5kg cylinder gives a gross margin of N704,000 per month. (Prices fluctuate at the depot, which also determines the sales cost to the consumers)
This venture will generate N192,000 as gross income a month.

Benefits of LPG (cooking gas) over kerosene and other conventional sources of domestic energy.

1. LPG is cheaper than Kerosene and other heavy fuels as it has lower level of impurities.

2. It is a safer and more efficient source of energy for homes, manufacturing process, automobiles and electricity.

3. Unlike kerosene and other heavy fuels, LPG burns cleanly with a blue flame and emits smaller amount of carbon. It is therefore environment friendly.

4. Because of absence of sooth during the combustion of LPG, it has no health risk unlike kerosene, charcoal and others that are associated with respiratory problems.

5. LPG saves time as it burns quickly to emit a large amount of energy. This is why most homes prefer LPG for cooking.
