Diana Abasi Ibanga, A Nigerian Researcher revealed details about possible homosexual practices forming part of his history in Akwa Ibom State, and also revealing thoughts that, homosexuality is a natural human phenomenon.

In Nigeria, people often claim that homosexuality is a borrowed phenomenon from the Western cultures. This forming part of the many reasons why the government placed a ban on homosexuality, claiming that it stands clearly against its cultures. But this Nigerian Researcher, revealed in a TVC News video footage that there are proofs showing traces of female homosexuality forming part of his cultures in his community in Akwa Ibom State. He said:

“The history of Africa has shown that we have been having homosexual phenomenon in this Africa. Even in African communities, so many African communities, even in my own community”

“I found out through my research, that in my community/tribe – Anang, that is in Akwa Ibom State. You have women, who were always in closet with a fellow woman, they call them husbands/Ebe, that is a woman calling a fellow woman husband, and now this people can be in closet for hours. They won’t allow other people to penetrate. And they’ll be keeping friendships between themselves. And now we don’t know what happens in those closets”

He further revealed that there have always been traces of homosexual practices in Africa, he confirmed by saying:

“Steven F. Morin, documented over 40 different African communities who’ve have had homosexual experiences in the past and even in the present. So I don’t know where it is un-African. This is a human phenomenon, and since it is a human phenomenon. Are Africans not human beings? They are human beings”

He proceeded to speak on Nigeria’s Anti-Gay Law, he said:

“This is an aberration on human rights. or, is [the law] now trying to say that homosexuals are not human beings? Because what is the essence of sentencing people? Is it to punish them, or to rehabilitate them? Now, it has been claimed [in the past] that this people were once sick, that they can be ‘rescued’ from this phenomenon. Now if this is what the Nigerian society is thinking, because that is what they were saying in the senate. Then why pass a 14years jail term? You should be rehabilitating them if you think that you can rehabilitate them”

He also acknowledged that homosexuality is only natural, African, and a valid human sexual orientation, he said:

“We should understand that this is human nature, and if it is human nature, then there’s no jail term that can change it. Even if you give people a 100years”

“My findings is that homosexuality is thoroughly African, in fact, we have more homosexuals in Africa, than in the Europe, before the advent of Christianity, I also discovered that homosexuality as a sexual orientation is a biological construct of the human body. And therefore no one can change the orientation. It’s like heterosexuality. That too cannot be changed. So if you cannot change heterosexuality, you cannot just change homosexuality”

He further proceeded to speak on homophobia and intolerance in the Nigerian society. He said:

“We don’t need this intolerance in the society, when you look at certain ideologies that drove Africa in the past, like in Igbo, they have the concept of ‘live and let live’ what is that supposed to stand for? Even if you have certain things that are considered aberration its cultures, they still allow you to stay. So there should be sexual tolerance in the society. In fact even the bible supports homosexuality. When you go to the Christian bible, in Galatians, there’s a place where Paul said: “there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave or free, man or woman” What is this supposed to mean? In the sight of God, there is neither man nor woman. We are all without sexual orientations! Now if you come to the issue of soul, does soul have a sex? So there should be sexual tolerance in the society. If there are people who are heterosexuals in the society, they should also know that there are individuals who are homosexuals too. We should not deal with people on the basis of their sexual orientation”

Anti-LGBTI laws: Nigeria
Nigerian law provides for a 14-year prison sentence for homosexual acts involving either men or women. In addition, a new law, enacted Jan. 7, 2014, provides for prison sentences of 10 years for Nigerians belonging to a gay organization, supporting same-sex marriages, or displaying same-sex affection in public. It also calls for up to 14 years in prison for any Nigerian who marries a member of the same sex.

In 12 Nigerian states in the north, sharia law also applies. For homosexual activity, that law provides for capital punishment for men, lashing or imprisonment for women. However, in its report on capital punishment in 2011, Amnesty International noted no executions in Nigeria.

According to the 2011 report on laws about homosexuality worldwide from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, Nigerian law on homosexual activity is codified in Chapter 77 of the Criminal Code Act:

Criminal Code Act, Chapter 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990 147

Section 214. “Any person who

(1) has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature; or

(2) has carnal knowledge of an animal; or

(3) permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature;

is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years.

Section 215. “Any person who attempts to commit any of the offences defined in the last preceding section is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for seven years. The offender cannot be arrested without warrant.”

Section 217. “Any male person who, whether in public or private, commits any act of gross indecency with another male person, or procures another male person to commit any act of gross indecency with him, or attempts to procure the commission of any such act by any male person with himself or with another male person, whether in public or private, is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years. The offender cannot be arrested without warrant.”
