It’s always a trip when characters from a favorite novel finds reality on the silver screen. Harry Potter. The GodFather, The Notebook, No Country For Old Men, Shcindlers List. The list is endless. But what about our own African Novels? When will Nollywood realize the storied gems we have in our past and current literature and start making them into blockbuster movies? Yes, there was that Netflix adaptation of Uzo Iweala’s ‘Beasts Of No Nation’ and then Biyi Bandele’s realization of Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘Half Of A Yelow Sun. But we need more.

In Nigeria that is still struggling with it’s reading culture, wouldn’t it make more sense for some of the amazing homegrown books and stories adapted into Nollywood movies? And with At least, it’s obvious that the cinema culture is growing.

To get ahead of that conversation, we decided to put together our own wishlist. In Hollywood and some parts of the world today, quite a number of books which are best sellers (or not) have been adapted to the movie screen for movie lovers and the general populace. Movies like, Die Hard, Casino Royale, No country for old men, The God Father and Harry Porter are some of the numerous books which have been made into films.
Anyway, enough of the blabbing, here are 10 Nigerian books that should be made blockbuster Nollywood movies.

1. The Famished Road

The prize winning novel is written by Ben Okri, the book is about a spirit child (Azaro) and the real world, some people described the book as magical realism, some say its African Traditional Religion Realism, and we may as well just call it JUJU. Anyway this book makes good for an African horror movie.

2. The Last Duty

The Last Duty is a war Novel, set during the civil war, this story revolves around six main characters, Ali, Toje, Ogenehovo, Aku, Odibo, and Oshevire. This is well written fictional story written by Isidore Okpewho, probably the best war fictional novel out of Nigeria.

3. Americanah

This is a book written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, It’s a book that explores the nature of race in America and the military troubles in Nigeria. Its set not only in Lagos, but in London and, as its title implies, America. It’s both thoughtful and funny, an ideal formula for adaptations.

4. Arrow of God

A novel that completes the trilogy (Things Fall Apart, No Longer At Ease, and Arrow of God), should definitely be made a movie. If not for anything but to complete the trilogy, as the other two have been adapted already. It is a book that centers on Ezeulu, the chief priest of several Igbo villages during the colonial days, where he battled with Missionaries just to maintain the Igbo traditional religion.

5. The Lion and the Jewel

This is a play written by Wole Soyinka, it talks about the corrupt Africa and how the youths should embrace their African culture, an issue we still face till date. The first transcript was published in 1962.

5. City of Memories

A book that talks about a love story in Northern Nigeria, a story of Ummi al-Qassim, a princess of Bolewa, and the feud that attended her love, first for a nobleman, then for a poet, a feud that bequeaths her with madness and death.
