There was confusion today in Makurdi, Benue State as a station wagon car carrying wedding gifts suddenly bursted into flames.

The car mysteriously caught fire just behind the fence of the Benue State University Medical School shortly after leaving the wedding reception held at a staff club situated within the institution.

Both the car and gifts burnt to ashes however there were no human casualties.

As at press time, there was no known cause of the inferno.

...at the end of the ceremony the Pastor prayed...

'Any evil gift from edible catering that has been given in this wedding; Holy Ghost!!! Fire!!!!'

...and prayer got answered.

Let the couple go for Thanksgiving!

The responses I am seeing to this post are strangely familiar. Absolute scandal in my estimation, yet not unexpected. Sometimes I wonder how we got to this sorry pass. Rigorous and creative thought are almost extinct and in fact sinful in the minds of many small people and on a sinister and depressing note, they are in the majority. Yes, this is 21st century Nigeria where superstition rules. Any attempt to view and explain events logically automatically makes you a carnal man at best and devil incarnate at worst. Which country makes progress without rigorous thought? How difficult is it to figure out that a car with its complicated electrical system complete with a power source, never mind extremely flammable fuel, can catch fire? Not rocket science in my book but only in the realm of the gods in the minds of many Nigerians. Troubling really. Which is why Nigerians pray for everything, yet nothing happens. One particular Ibo adage sums up this laziness in thought for me. 'Hapu ihe talu n'abali ka o buru anwu' which literally means, Assume everthing that bit in the night to be mosquito' In other words, if a snake bites you in the night, assume it is a mosquito! Can you ever find solution to that with this mindset? Nigerians are lazy in thought, by choice! Disgusting!
