Everton will host Arsenal at Goodison Park on Saturday evening as the new season begins on Saturday. David Moyes is concerned by his failure to significantly add to his Everton squad ahead of the 2009/10 campaign. Moyes said: "We are not ready as far as the squad goes, we want more players in. We let a few go in the summer - Andy van der Meyde, Lars Jacobson, Nuno Valente - and we have not replaced any of those players yet.'' So far, Moyes has only brought in Brazilian striker Jo on loan from Manchester City and a clutch of untried youngsters who will be in the reserve squad. Moyes saw a much-improved performance from his players on Friday when Everton beat Malaga 2-1 at Goodison Park, with Manchester City target Lescott playing the full match and getting a rousing reception from home fans. Arsenal's back in the spotlight as they go over to meet the Toffees on Saturday. Long since genuine title contenders - they have not finished in the top two since 2005, nor won the league since their Invincibles season of 03/04 and have now gone four years without a trophy - some have even questioned Wenger, the manager who will clock up 13 years in charge next month. Wenger has already suffered a summer where he has seen players sold for large sums of money, and has seen little in the way of movement the other way. The sale of Emmanuel Adebayor(24 Premier league goals in the 07/08 season), and the sale of Kolo Toure, both to rival club Manchester City got many wondering what exactly Arsene has got planned for the club this season. Only signing made so far is Thomas Vermaelen who is supposed to make some effort defensively. The likes of Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner, Eduardo and Carlos Vela may not have the power, presence or fitness record to be relied upon to play a similar role to that of Adebayor. . .and that means while Wenger may feel he can get away without signing a new defender, he must replace the striker. One bright spot will surely be the emergence of Jack Wilshire. The 17-year-old midfielder, who made one Premier League appearance from the bench, has already shown his talents in the Carling Cup. And with Samir Nasri and Tomas Rosicky to miss the start of the season he may be thrown in early. Another bright spot is the presence of Andrei Arshavin who is always ready to bang in the goals for the Gunners. Now that there is a growing band of challengers ready to knock Arsenal off their perch, there will be even less room for error at the Emirates. |
