Nigeria : Scrap Nursing Schools Now! by Nobody: 3:05am On May 12, 2016
I started my journey in Nursing at a
school of Nursing ,never knew it was
gonna be so demanding, I read,
studied hard like have never done
before.
The fear of been expelled due to
examination failure from school after
the huge school fees paid by my
parents couldn't allow me to be
unserious....
And it was not like if u can scale the
first level then you are in for
real.....no no, at each level of exams
people were sent back home (those
were sad periods)

My tutors were and are wonderful
people, We were
academically,psychologically,
morally and spiritually trained to be a
NURSE.
You will be surprised at how we read
as if we do not pray and how we
prayed as if we do not read......how
time flies!
It was in Nursing I learnt that you
can fail if you are academically
sound and morally poor.
At the end of the three years, I wrote
my Almighty Nursing Council
qualifying examination for nurses,
thank God I passed.

But it was so devastating that with
all the time, huge money (I spent
close to 1.5m just for
fees),patience,endurance,hard work,
late night readings, a complete 3
years calendar in school with only 6
weeks break in between and series of
examinations done in that school....I
have no EDUCATIONAL
QUALIFICATION but a
PROFESSIONAL
QUALIFICATION......funny.
We are issued certificates that we
Dont know where to claim.....is it a
diploma or a higher diploma,what
exactly?
After a while you accept your fate
and start again......direct entry to a
university, an additional 4-5 years
with a year service if you are not
over 30 ofcourse ,making 9 years!
The shout of an affliation of schools
of Nursing to a university is out of it I
actually got tired of that talk because
I discovered that:

1. SON is still under the ministry of
health because of the income
generated to the ministry.
2. Its still within the hospital because
of the income generated to their
pockets and the student nurses are
part of the work force of such
hospitals.
All still boils down to personal gains
and interest which are selfish and are
at the detriment of the profession.
Am hurt, but I pick my profession
above my ego and I stand to Say
SCRAP SCHOOLS OF NURSING.
You want the progress of this
profession?

Educate ur loved ones not to obtain
the form cos it has no educational
qualification.
NURSES ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,
LET'S BEGIN TO SPEAK UP.

Actually I'd go for the last hashtag #ReformNaijaNursingEducation. Rather "reformed" than scrapped.

Bro I can feel your pain because I have someone that is very close to me who is facing the same dilemma as you. As for me FG shud update schools of nursing to either a higher diploma status or a degree awarding institutions.

It is a very pathetic situation.
Every other Commonwealth countries has upgraded and affiliated their nursing schools to universities but Nigerian corruption won't allow our policy makers to do just that because of the illegal exorbitant fees they are enjoying which are paid by the students.

I seriously had a deep thought about this.there's still a big segregation between those studying nursing in a university and those studying in a nursing school.Even the nursing & midwifery council should also intensify efforts in the matter.i would suggest affiliating the nursing schools to a university
