At N370/US$1, the option of schooling abroad is no longer available to most Lagosians. And with the state of insecurity in the country today, sending your children or wards or even contemplating another degree for yourself outside of a university in Lagos is not so appealing any more.

This means that we all need to look closer home for university education either for ourselves or for our dependants.
What then are the (best) options when choosing a university in Lagos?

Pan-Atlantic University

Pan-Atlantic University is a private, non-profit educational institution in Lagos, Nigeria. The university had its origin as the Lagos Business School (LBS), established in 1991. In May 2013 its name was changed to Pan-Atlantic University, in order to avoid confusion with the Pan-African University of the African Union.

In September 2011 the university launched the Virtual Museum of Modern Nigerian Art, a website created by Jess Castellote, a Spanish architect that includes over 400 works from 81 artists, including pioneering Nigerian artists such as Aina Onabolu and Bruce Onobrakpeya and emerging artists such as Richardson Ovbiebo and Babalola Lawson.

Its main schools (faculties) are the Lagos Business School, The School of Media & Communication, and the Enterprise Development Centre.

Initially, the school focused on management training and post graduate studies but has now introduced several undergraduate programs in communication and business related fields.

University of Lagos

The University of Lagos is considered a microcosm (smaller version) of larger society because it is a university set in the heart of the biggest city in Nigeria. Founded in 1962, the University of Lagos has for over 5 decades, tried to build a legacy of academic excellence and is today considered as one of the best ‘good old schools’.

Sadly, it has suffered the same level of decay as the society it mirrors with a significant drop in the quality of teaching, research and student output.

But there is hope – proud alumni like the Vice President of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osinbajo are expected to bring change to federal institutions like Unilag and restore past glory.

Caleb University

Prince Oladega Adebogun, the founder of Caleb University started the university in the face of the falling standards of public institutions (like Unilag). The demand amongst most parents for schools with high academic standards, as well as the inculcation of true Christian values served as the extra impetus for the creation of Caleb University.

The University started full academic program with admission of its first set of students in January 2008 and has continued to grow in stature and reputation.

National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

The National Open University was initially established in July 1983 as the springboard for open and distance learning in Nigeria, but was suspended by the government in April 1984.

However, it was resuscitated in April 2001 by the former President of Nigeria, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, who is himself a proud graduate of NOUN. At take off of the university, pioneer student enrollment stood at 32,400.

NOUN operates from its Administrative Headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, with Study Centres throughout the country. It offers over 50 programmes and 750 courses all of which have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC)

The National Open University is arguably the best option for entrepreneurs and business owners who typically suffer major time constraints due to work schedules and the demanding Lagos hustle.

Lagos State University

Lagos State University – LASU – was established in 1983 with its main campus in Ojo; it is the only state university in the former British colony.

Like all other state universities the world over, LASU remains in the shadow of its Federal forebear – Unilag. It has however managed to carve a name for itself over the years.

With the ardent support of the state government, LASU’s profile has increased tremendously. The Law faculty has been rated consistently among the best in the country, and its school of medicine is being developed to world standards by the administration of Governor Ambode.

The Right Choice…

For academic excellence, PAU is the standout winner. But the courses on offer are few; and expensive.

For reputation, Unilag comes a distant second. If you are willing to take the time and pay close attention to your ward or child, it however remains a very good option.

If morality and strong christian values are important to you, then Caleb is the obvious pick. But do you really want your child to be treated like a secondary school student while at a university in Lagos?

Like NOUN, LASU’s multi campus setup is very useful for the adult or working student, while the main campus provides a traditional university environment.

For now, these are the available options for choosing a university in Lagos. But can these 4 institutions really cater to the needs of the largest city in Africa?

I'm very sure the number of universities in osun state outnumbered that of Lagos. Also, total number of higher institutions in osun state must be more than that of Lagos.
