…Urges agencies to investigate building materials

A public affair analyst, Mr.Oyejide Sunkanmi has stated that the building materials used in the construction of the four-storey building, which collapsed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, last Friday should be thoroughly investigated.

He noted that if the building materials used were found wanting, the contractors and the supervising engineers should be severely dealt with, according to the law.

Oyejide wondered if the building was built by non-professionals who did not take necessary precautionary steps before embarking on the structure.

‎His words,”I suggest a complete investigation of the kind of people who handled the project. Some quacks are playing with innocent lives. We cannot bring back the woman that lost her life in the incident.‎ It is the duty of the Ogun State Ministry of Works and the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria to ensure the contractors handling project of this magnitude are not quacks. The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) must always ensure the materials supplied to sites are not substandard,” he added.

Oyejide further said that the Ogun State government owes the family of the deceased and the injured site workers some answers.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected in this unfortunate incident. What bothers me most is the silence of Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the construction company handling the project concerning the deceased worker. When is the Ogun State government offering a statement of condolence to the family?”
