Chinese businessman Doctor Tony Jiantong Xia who owns Recon Group has completed the total takeover of Premier League Aston Villa. Villa chairman Steve Hollis had been talking to groups from the UK and America but the Chinese consortium emerged as the preferred bidder to buy the Midlands side from Randy Lerner.



A statement posted on the club’s official website stated that Xia will be targeting an immediate return to the Premier League after they were relegated this term. Meanwhile the Premier League and Football League will need to ratify the takeover and be satisfied by a fit and proper person’s test. Lerner, who first signalled his intention to sell the club in 2014, penned a long and bizarre open letter to supporters on the club’s website once the sale was confirmed, in which he likened their relegation campaign to ‘Bannockburn’.
