Armed Fulani herdsmen sack Ekiti community, kill two, promise to return

Hundreds of armed Fulani men yesterday night invaded Oke-Ako, an ancient Ekiti community killing two people, leaving tens of people wounded. The wounded have been taken to Ikole General Hospital, the headquarter of the local council.
“Women were raped and children hacked with knives. Old people were mauled down and several people sustained gunshot wounds” eyewitness told Irohinoodua this morning.
The Fulani herdsmen came with sophisticated weapons. They had AK-47. They had pump action guns. They had cutlasses, daggers and charms, competent source told our correspondent.
Irohinoodua was informed that the Fulani group had written a letter to the community in Arabic warning that it would invade with arms. A chief in the community who does not wish to be named told Irohinoodua that when the letter was brought to the village, no one could read Arabic to understand the meaning of the content until a few days before the attack when the letter had been passed round the surrounding towns that have Islamic scholars. Oke-Ako is one of the few Yoruba communities without a single Muslim.
Our correspondent heard that the Fulani herdsmen invaded Oke-Ako in the night of Friday shooting into the air before unleashing mayhem on a community that has existed for over 500 years. One Mrs Alimi, a non-native Muslim woman whose husband is from Itapaji-Ekiti had her two hands chopped off with a cutlass. One source claimed the attack may not be unconnected with a brawl the Fulani had with a traditonal ruler in the area, who had warned the Fulani herdsmen against destroying the livelihhood of the communities and setting the forest reserve on fire for their cattle to feed on budding plants.
“We were attacked. We didn’t provoke them. We had no prior knowledge of conflict with them. They started shouting Allahu Akbah, they wore turban and came in horses. They ransacked the whole village. Women were brought out from their homes. Old and young women were raped. Some were gang raped. Our children were left crying all night”, Alaba Akerele a resident of the town told Irohinoodua correspondent who visited the community this morning. He said the herdsmen promised to return to Oke Ako and many other Yoruba communities to continue the onslught. "They said in plain language that the attacks will continue across Yoruba states."
He said by the time the security operatives came calling, the damage had been done. “There was no security response for the first 5 hours of their deadly operation. We were left at their mercy. They ringed the city and threatened that they would set the whole place ablaze. Women and children were wailing, but they laughed away as they carried out these atrocities.’
Oke-Ako has no police post. It happened that the only police post in the area was removed in the 2000s when a police man of Edo State origin was killed by the Fulani herdsmen. The police subsequently took police posts from Oke-Ako and the surrounding villages arguing that the ‘communities do not deserve police posts since they could not protect the police posted into the area.’ Till date, police posts have yet to return to Oke-Ako, Irele, Ipao and Itapaji and Iye-Mero the five communities affected by the earlier killing of the police rating.
