In an appalling display of fatherly conduct, a Saudi Arabian man shot a doctor who was helping his wife give birth because he was a male and not a female doctor.

Dr Muhannad Al-Zabn was gunned down after meeting the husband outside the delivery ward at King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh.

Al-Zabn met the furious husband in the garden of the hospital assuming he was going to receive thanks for successfully delivering the baby. Instead, the man pulled out a gun from underneath his jacket and fired shots at the doctor, the Gulf News website said.

Dr Al-Zabn was immediately taken to intensive care, and after an operation, is now said to be in a stable condition.

The anonymous man was later arrested by police after fleeing the scene.

Women and men are segregated from an early age in Saudi Arabia. On top of this, women are banned from driving and require a male chaperone, known as a 'mahram', at all times.

In 2014, the Ministry of Health supplied an instruction that male medical workers could only examine female patients if a female nurse was also present.

"Women are prohibited from exposing body parts to male doctors in Islamic law, especially during childbirth. This does not include medical emergencies. Islamic jurisprudence makes exceptions," Qais al-Mubarak, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars said, according to a report by The New Arab.

In 2011, a Saudi woman launched a Facebook group campaign called 'Pure Hospitals' lobbying for an all-female hospital.

"The mixing of men and women in hospitals and other places leads to corruption and vices such as exchanging looks, breakdowns in barriers between men and women, and unethical relationships forbidden in Islam," the woman was reported as saying.
