There finally appears to be an end in sight to the tomato disease, Tuta Absoluta, responsible for the massive destruction of tomato in farmlands across the country, which has made the price of tomatoes sky-rocketed in the past few weeks.

This follows an announcement by the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), Zaria, on Thursday, June 2, that it had developed a vaccine for the tomato pest commonly referred to as Tomato Ebola, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

“This vaccine has been found to be very effective after undergoing various scientific testing,’’ the Director-General of the institute, Prof. Idris Bugaje said.

The institute said it was partnering with regulatory agencies to certify the vaccine for onward use by farmers in Nigeria and the world at large.

According to the spokesperson of the institute, Aliyu, the vaccine would be launched soon for the good of the nation.

He said: We will work with the state and federal government agencies to carry diffuse this important development to our teeming farmers in the country and beyond. Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh has described the food eaten by most Nigerians as poison.

He also disclosed that over boiling of cow meat by Nigerians was saving them from being infected by Tuberculosis. Ogbeh made his comments at a one-day public hearing on food security organized by the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.
