Barring any last-minute change in plans, the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, will today (Thursday) meet with Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of all the Deposit Money Banks in the country.

The meeting, which is scheduled to hold at the headquarters of the apex bank in Abuja, according to findings, may consider the massive sacking of workers in the banking sector.

A total of about 1,400 workers had so far been sacked between last week and Wednesday by Deposit Money Banks in a move to prune down the number of workforce in the sector.

The PUNCH had last week reported that Ecobank Nigeria sacked over 1,040 of its employees, while Diamond Bank Plc and Skye Bank also disengaged 200 and 175 members of their workforce respectively.

FBN Holdings, the parent company of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, had recently said it would prune the number of its employees by 1,000.

Following the gale of job losses in the banking sector, the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, had on Friday directed the banks to stop further sacking of workers.

The minister said that all the sacking done in the past four months should be put on hold pending the outcome of a proposed stakeholders’ summit for employers and employees of the banking, insurance and other financial institutions scheduled for the first week of July.

“Following the high spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the ongoing retrenchment in the sector pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry,” Ngige had said.

But sources told our correspondent that the issue of mass sacking might feature prominently at Thursday’s meeting because of the fact that it had attracted the attention of the Federal Government.

A top official of one of the banks confided in our correspondent that while the decision to sack workers was a tough one, there was no way the DMBs could sustain the huge cost of operations following the drop in government patronage.

The source said, “You will recall that the banking sector has been in the spotlight due to the huge loss of jobs by bankers. The reason for this action is obvious when you consider the fact that the banks are no longer making huge profits the way they used to.

“A lot of stakeholders in the sector are concerned about this development and I am sure that this issue will be discussed at the Bankers’ Committee meeting scheduled to hold on Thursday at the CBN headquarters.”

Apart from the issue of mass sacking, it was gathered that the new foreign exchange policy would also be discussed at the meeting.

The apex bank is on the verge of releasing a new guideline on the management of foreign exchange in the country.

Emefiele had said the policy, when unveiled, would enable the CBN to retain a small window for critical transactions.

He gave some of such transactions as importation of vital machinery for production as well as essential basic raw materials critical for manufacturing, which by their nature could not be sourced locally.

A flexible exchange rate system is a monetary system that allows the exchange rate to be determined by supply and demand.

The implication of this is that with a high demand for the dollar in Nigeria, there is every likelihood that the naira will experience further decline.

I pray the meeting yields a positive result for others, who are working in the sector today to let go of their emotional pangs, fear of being sacked...... I couldn't help it when a girl in the neighborhood, returned home yesterday with her sacked letter from Ecobank, haven gone to submit her ID card and other belongings to the contract firm, who employed her before this ugly occurrence of job dismissal. She sobered in tears, and looked completely lost in misfortune.

She looks miserable than ever, can't imagine she's jobless again, just after few years ago she secured the job with the bank...

I immediately put myself in her shoes, walk and understand it hurts...

It's never funny in the street, looking for job in this country... I pray, Others will never fall victims of this untimely job dismissal, henceforth.

Meanwhile, joblessness and living in hell are like....

I believe the banks has the sole right to restructure and reduce staff strength since government do not foot their running and operational cost. However, the banks junior staff should not be the ones to suffer since major largess of the profit and welfare goes to the pockets of their executives!!! shocked sad

Buhari should assemble his economic team asap.

all these meetings are exercise in futility. You cant tell a private investor not to adjust to economic realities.

CBN took away, COT charge by banks, FG introduced TSA and that marked beginning of trouble for our banks that are largely public sector fund driven.

all over the world, Governments pay attention to banking sector because the drive the monetary policy of the government.

When Citi bank of America laid off almost 3000 staff in 2009, the shotlisted another 2000, but before they did that, Obama knew the consequence of job loss in the economy.

it will negate his campaign to create jobs.

The American government gave a bail out to 5 ailing banks and 4 ailing companies.

does FG have any bail out for banks?, if not its a meeting in futility.

If a bus is in bad shape and needs urgent repairs, a good driver may still manage it to it's destination. But if a bus is new brand and is in good shape, a bad driver will crash it. Now imagine a bad driver driving a bad car!

PMB may be doing above average in security and integrity, but he is a bad driver of economy vehicle. Unfortunately he is surrounded by incompetent and disloyal conductors. Some passengers(Zombies) are not even helping matters claiming that PMB body language and integrity alone can assist him to drive us out of the economy storms. It is better we cry out now and make PMB realise that he needs urgent help on managing our economy before he crashes our bus!
We should all note that Wailers and Zombies are in the same bus driven by a driver that needs urgent help.

Buhari has four advisers/special assistants on media and publicity,
but only one adviser on the economy.

Nobody should be suprised that the government is high on pictures but low on economic growth.
The Banks are simply reacting to the bad economy. Other industries are already laying off workers

I laugh but not from my heart though. It is high time revolution has to be. A lot of arable in the north especially. Malaysia is small in terms of land mass but yet come and see how the country is. The source of their wealth is just palm oil, of which if our leaders are considerate and not selfish Nigeria will be the highest exporter of agricultural products. I pity my people really

Cancel TSA and return funds to banks for them to drive macroeconomic growth and evolve other business solutions to our ailing economy. Anything (meeting) short of that is an exercise in futility.

Don't mind those bungling Dumbos.

They Nuked the banking sector, and by extension, the entire economy with their ill-concieved TSA implementation.
Now, the same Dumbos are trying to dictate to banks not to restructure for survival.

It's crystal clear that these Dumbos don't understand how the economy and the free market system works.

Firstly ,banks are private companies owned by individuals so they have the power to hire and fire.

Secondly, mandating that all govt funds be paid into one TSA over a short time is courting anarchy.

Now the banks have no money to do business and their business modus operandi has been gravely altered.
And with the economy in the state it is na double wahala.
So most of the banks are glorified "Akawo" houses.

This stone una dey cook for we naija haff done!
