What you should know about cardiac arrest and Heart attack

Cardiac arrest is the sudden stoppage of blood circulation due to the FAILURE OF THE HEART TO PUMP EFFECTIVELY OR AT ALL. Glucose and oxygen delivery to the body stops, unconsciousness and absent breathing ensue and irreversible brain injury occurs within 4 minutes.

Cardiac arrest will kill, if there is no prompt intervention (cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation).
The commonest cause is coronary artery disease (CAD). Coronary artery diseases include heart conditions such as stable angina, unstable angina and myocardial infarction. They result from narrowing of the blood vessels that enrich the heart.
The risk of having Coronary artery disease( and subsequently Cardiac arrest) is increased with UNCONTROLLED HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE,INCREASING AGE, SMOKING, DIABETES, OBESITY, EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL, LACK OF EXERCISE, HIGH BLOOD CHOLESTEROL AND UNHEALTHY DIET.
CAD can be managed by prevention and medication (e.g. aspirin, beta blockers, antiplatelet). Surgery can be done in severe cases

Prevention is always better and cheaper than cure. Preventive actions are: blood pressure check, regular exercise, avoid smoking, limit alcohol, and eat healthy (lots of fruits and vegetables, less of fat and oil and limit salt intake), screen and treat diabetes and hypertension and reduce weight.

Heart attack is different from cardiac arrest. Heart attack or Myocardial infarction occurs when blood flow to the heart stops leading to damage or death of heart muscle. The symptom is that of left sided (or center) chest pain or discomfort and the pain can spread to the shoulder, arm, back, n eck or jaw. Other symptoms are nausea, breathlessness and feeling tired.
The risk factors of Heart attack are same as those of cardiac arrest.
Let’s be educated and informed about the seriousness of heart diseases in Nigeria. Cardiovascular disease claim a whopping 17 million lives every year globally. Nigeria is not exempted from this scourge as prevalence of hypertension and heart disease are on the rise, mainly due to adopting the western life style. Heart attack affects a serious percent of the population. Infornation is power
