Colombia paid the price for resting their first choice team after all 10 men including stars James Rodriguez and Juan Cuadrado were made to sit on the bench during the match. A win or draw would have ensured they top the group A table and face Ecuador but instead they will be playing Brazil in the quarter finals.

With an early goal in the 2nd minute by Johan Venegas for Costa Rica, the Colombians made an equalizer with a goal from Frank Fabra in the 7th minute only to have him score an own goal in the 35th minute. The Costa Ricans added another one in the second half with a goal from Celso Borges. But the Colombians failed to get a draw despite a goal scored by Marlos Moreno in the 73rd minute.
