BENIN CITY—THE Body of Heads of Departments and Nursing Services and Principals of Schools, HDNSPS, in federal health institutions in the country, lamented yesterday, that the prevailing economic hardship in the country has led to increase in the number of deaths recorded daily in the country. The organisation lamented that nurses in the country lack the required tools to do their jobs effectively, but expressed optimism that the Federal Government will assist the nurses in improving their skills in the interest of Nigerians. Speaking at the 16th National Scientific Conference/AGM of the committee of Heads of Departments of Nursing Services and Principals of Schools of Nursing in Federal Health Institutions, the chairman of the body, Mr Haruna Danladi, attributed the economic hardship to the cause of the different ailments in the country, regretting however, that challenges facing the health sector such as inadequate tools to work had worsened the situation. Pointing out that the Federal Government was making frantic efforts to fix the nation’s economy, Danladi assured that nurses at the federal institutions would be provided the tools to do their jobs effectively.

Sad report, but not unexpected.

Unemployment increases the rate of gangsterism, hooliganism, and cultism. How do one explain the situation of a graduate cultist without relating it with unemployment? Sadly, when cultists fight, casualties are recorded.

The same applies to prostitution and transmission of sexual-related diseases. An unemployed man may find it hard to maintain a relationship. How can he preach endurance and love to his 30-year old girlfriend? Next move is to help himself out at a brothel, use the leftover on alcohol, etc.

Do we still need to talk about depression and the effect of economic hardship on mental health? First it was CBN, now it's FIRS! So how do you conveniently persuade a grown up graduate to survive with 'N-Power' package without accommodating unhealthy emotional thoughts?

The media has been churning out billions and trillions over the past months in prints. The notion these graduates have is that there is money in the nation. Telling them the country is broke will only aggravate the already depressed condition. On the one hand, they perceive the nation is rich (people have not stop flying in the space), and here on the other hand, the government wants them to believe the nation is broke, and can no longer meet their needs. Never underestimate the effect of these economic confusions on mental health.
