The 500-hp Mercedes G55 AMG with its supercharged V-8 is arguably the baddest factory-built SUV on the market. The roar emitted by its dual side pipes is certain to wake up the entire neighborhood, and the big beast’s acceleration is as fearsome as its appetite for premium fuel. Zero to 60 mph is accomplished in an estimated 5.0 seconds and top speed is governed at 130 mph, which seems a good thing with the G-Wagen’s lofty center of gravity and military-bred suspension.

But the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the upcoming M versions of the BMW X5 and X6 are powerful alternatives. And for a higher cylinder count—if you live in Europe or Asia—you can simply turn to the Volkswagen Touareg W12 or Audi's new Q7 V-12 TDI.

If it’s Still Not Ludicrous Enough—Call Brabus!
If AMG won't act, then Brabus has been known to take up the challenge. Say hello to the G V12 S Biturbo, which substitutes a twin-turbocharged V-12 for the supercharged V-8 of the factory-built G55 AMG. The base engine for this Brabus "SV12 S" engine is Benz’s own twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-12 that powers the S600 and CL600 and is enlarged for various AMG models, including the 661-hp, 6.0-liter SL65 AMG Black Series.

Brabus takes this engine to 6.3 liters by boring it out and lengthening the stroke. Power stands at 690 hp at 5100 rpm and maximum torque is a monstrous 811 lb-ft. The torque is in fact electronically limited—the engine is theoretically capable of 974 lb-ft—in order to keep the five-speed automatic transmission and the G's complex all-wheel-drive system from lunching themselves.
Brabus estimates 62 mph is achieved in a surreal 4.3 seconds, and the G is able to achieve a top speed of 163 mph. The limiter comes in at 150 mph, though, and we’re not totally sure we’d want to go any faster.

For looks, the Brabus G V12 S Biturbo offers wheels of up to 22 inches in diameter, dual stainless-steel exhaust pipes left and right, and a trendy strip of LED daytime running lights. The front and rear bumpers are modified, and the option list to further individualize this monster G-Wagen is very long indeed. You know, just in case you have change left over from the €379,000 ($480,000) asking price. That’s expensive, but the dropped jaws of all the tree-huggers you blow by will be priceless.

It has a twin-blade radiator grill with four chrome inserts, an AMG bumper with three airflow inlets and high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts, new LED daytime running lamps below the bi-xenon headlamps, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts, AMG instrument cluster with colour TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors, E-SELECT shift lever from SLS AMG, and "designo" leather upholstery with ruffled leather door paneling.

There's nothing quite like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class sports-utility vehicle. How many vehicles can say they were designed at the request of the Shah of Iran, have served as the official transportation device for the Pope, are used as military vehicles by nearly every major country in the world and are sold brand new fully swathed in luxury from car dealerships in North America?

Only one that we can think of: the G-Class. The G has been around for more than 35 years, although only since 2002 has the G-Class been officially imported by Mercedes-Benz. Previously, North American importation was through Santa Fe, New Mexico-based grey market importer Europa International. Since 2002, the G has been available new from Mercedes-Benz dealers, despite brief hiatuses.

The lineup includes the G500, G550, G55, the mid-level Mercedes-AMG G63, and the range-topping, V12-powered G65.

Recent Changes;
For the latest model year, the G gets minor visual tweaks and a more efficient twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine. The G was once expected to be replaced officially in the consumer market by the GL-Class sports utility vehicles, but its fans protested and Mercedes-Benz relented. Thus, despite a history dating back more than a generation, the G-Wagen is still built by Magna-Steyr in Austria and sold new.

One of the most rugged vehicles ever produced, the "standard" G500 & G550 features full body-on-frame construction, solid axles front and rear, three differential locks and copious plating underneath to fend off rocks. Underhood is a 4.0 liter V8 engine that puts out 416 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 450 pound-feet of torque from 2,000 to 4,750 rpm. It features a seven-speed automatic transmission with Touch Shift manual-style shifting. You can't really see a different with it to a g63 AMG, just the AMG engine was left out to give consumers different options to choose from because not everyone likes the g63 noise.

The 2013 G500 takes 5.8 seconds to hit 60 mph from a stop, an impressive statistic considering it's about as aerodynamic as a 1970s Volvo and it weighs over 5,800 pounds. Fuel economy checks in at 13 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway.

Inside, the 2013 G500 & G550 continues to show its age thanks to a flat, upright windshield, limited shoulder room and blocky design. Yet its exceedingly well built and now features a new instrument panel and a center stack that brings the secondary controls into the 21st century. Standard equipment includes Mercedes-Benz's latest navigation and infotainment systems, a powerful harman/kardon audio system, a multicontour driver's seat with pneumatic bolsters and extensive premium leather trim.

Electronic driving aids include blind spot detection, parking sensors on both ends, a rear-view camera, stability control, and trailer stability assist.

Key competitors;
The timeless Mercedes-Benz G-Class is arguably in a class of its own given its very truck-like design, but it still faces competition from the Land Rover Range Rover, the Infiniti QX80 and the Lexus LX.
