Blind Blocks And Hollow Blocks For Building What's The Difference? by DeRay98(m): 6:05am On Jun 18, 2016
In Benin and many other places people build houses with blind/solid blocks while in Lagos hollow are used. Can building experts tell us the difference?

There are so many difference between blind and hollow block, I will highlight few of them for you. But first you need to understand that structurally block is not a load bearing element. But it can act as such in bungalows and if the block is specifically designed and moulded as such. But 95% of blocks moulded in Nigeria are not load bearing. Now to the difference:
1. Blind blocks due to its weight comes only in 5" & 6" form while hollow blocks comes mainly in 6"&9"
2. Blind blocks are mainly used in bungalows while hollow blocks are used both in bungalows and storey building cos most columns dimensions are 225*225mm and above ie 9"*9"
3. Hollow blocks are cheaper that blind blocks since they consume less material for production.
4. Hollow blocks constitute less self weight to the building than blind block.

If you are saying that blind blocks are not meant for storey buildings, in Benin City that's 99% of all buildings including storey buildings are built with. Though, there are fewer storeys than Lagos but there are rarely building collapsing compared with Lagos. However, I can also point out here that people build in Benin with more consciousness of safety than in Lagos where safety is sacrificed for profit.

I didn't literally mean u can't use blind blocks for storey building, but hollow blocks are more advising cos 1. It is cheaper, 2. It has less weight than blind blocks..
