1. Avoid looking around: The best way to read and avoid distraction is to avoid looking around at everything that passes around or disturbs your attention when you are reading. Looking around while reading does not only distract your attention but also lengthen your reading time also as you are most likely to read the same line several times when you return your attention back to your book.

2. Switch off your mobile phone: always having your mobile phone with you is advisable because of emergency or when your attention is needed urgently but that can actually be a source of distraction to you. Imagine your phone ringing at intervals while reading and the disturbance that it causes including what you might hear from the caller which may put you in an emotional imbalance. Therefore in other to avoid unnecessary distractions, avoid going to read with your mobile phone or switch it off.

3. Put off your mobile Data: This point may seem to have a correlation with the one above. In extreme cases that reading with your mobile phone is inevitable due to some cogent reasons, then it is better you switch off the mobile data to prevent the distractions that come with notifications from social media sources like Facebook, WhatsApp, BBM etc.

4. Select your reading mate(s) wisely: The people that gather to read with you can sometimes be a source of distraction to you. If you go to read with people who are intellectually lazy and who likes to talk a lot and play away their time then, you are on a failed mission of getting focused on your studies. Select those who read with you judiciously if you intend to get what you desire from your study time.

5. Read several books within a reading period: There is a popular saying that monopoly kills interest. Reading a particular book for a long period of time can be boring and tiring. To maintain focus and attention, you can get different books to read with you so that you can switch to another book when you get bored of reading the other.

6. Try to recall: reading for pleasure and for examination is not the same thing. You have to stress your brain the more when you are reading to understand and memorize. Trying to remember what you recently read by closing your book and saying them to yourself will go a long way in ensuring that you have your focus and attention to your book.

7. Rest when you are tired: Reading is a work and therefore you are bound to get tired. When you continue reading after you are tired, you are"dis-memorising" what you have read earlier and this could render all that you have read earlier useless. Try to rest when you get tired of reading and possibly continue when you regained the energy to read again.

8. Eat when you get tired and hungry: Reading when you are hungry will not only prevent you from understanding what you are reading, it also poses health challenge to you as your brain is being strained.

9. Writing while reading: To some persons this may be a time waster but it is really a pretty way to memorize easily. Writing while reading may be an option for theoretical notes but is compulsory for calculation exercises and exercises that require graphs.

10. When you are totally exhausted, take a nap: Sleep may be the last option to reinvigorate yourself. Sleep enables your brain to rest from the work of assimilating and digestion of the academic content in which it has been subjected to.
