Who Is Your God?

TEXT: 2 CHRONICLES 25:11-16

"Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand" (2 Chronicles 25:15).

Some people, ironically seem to chart the path of their own destruction. The attitude of Amaziah in our text today is not only laughable but ridiculous. He had led Judah into battle against Edom and conquered. He killed up to twenty thousand Edomites. Surprisingly, however, he brought into Judah the gods of the children of Seirs (Edom) and adopted them as his God in place of the Almighty God, who gave him victory over Edom. It could easily pass for the highest form of foolishness that could be exhibited by any king on earth. If the gods of Edom were that powerful why didn’t they assist the Edomites to defeat the army of Judah?

Before you start to crucify Amaziah, examine your own life too. Are you sure you are not guilty of the sin of idolatry or ingratitude? Many today, have not only turned the benevolence of God into objects of worship, they are equally paying God back in a bad coin. All good gifts come from God, but many today worship the gifts rather than the Giver. Some who used to be fervent for God while they were unemployed have started to miss fellowship on the excuse of tight work schedules. There are some who were faithful to God when they were still looking up to Him for children. But as soon as the children came they place their interest over the service to God.

Remember, whatever takes your attention from God has become your god, and such action portends disastrous consequences. No wonder, "the anger of God was kindled against Amaziah". Worse of all, when God gave him the latitude to retrace his step, he spurned divine mercy. It is better to retrace your step now and return to God.

Thought for today: Heed the Master’s whistle.

Giving For God's Service

TEXT: Nehemiah 13:10-14

"Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the storehouse" (Nehemiah 13:12)

As we approach the end of the age, nations are plagued with economic recession, caused by mismanagement and failure to fully tap God-given resources. The resultant effect is that millions of people are losing their jobs around the world, due to reduction in labour. In contrast, Church work demands more labourers, even during these hard times. "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few". From where comes this provision? God relies on the faithful giving of His people. Such must therefore see it as their duty to God to give of their substance.

Nehemiah was shocked on reaching the house of the Lord that the ministers there, the Levites and their choristers, had abandoned their post for lack of provision. They left the ministry of the word, in search of food on the farms. The leaders were to be blamed for not teaching the people to give their tithes and offerings, so that there will be "meat in God's house (Malachi 3:10). Nehemiah corrected the lapses, ordered the people to bring in their tithes and the Levites were restored to their ministry. He appointed honest and faithful men to manage the resources. By this the Levites had their provision regularly supplied and they remained in their service to God and the people.

Many anointed ministers are quitting the ministry today not for lack of vision but for want of food. This ought not to be. Believers are to live up to their responsibility of regularly paying their tithes and offerings, so that this generation of anointed ministers of God is not lost to commerce and industry.

Those who manage church estate need to be faithful, honest and prudent, so that there is no lack in God's house. How faithful are you in obeying God's command to bring in all the tithes? To deny the Church of your tithes is to rob God of what rightly belongs to Him. To obey is better than sacrifice. You can make amends if you are found wanting.

Thought for the day: "Give, not of necessity but cheerfully"

What Manner of Repentance?
Thursday, February 25, 2010

TEXT: JEREMIAH 35:1-19

"But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever" (Jeremiah 35:6).

The children of Judah and Jerusalem had been constantly stiff-necked; they had spurned at God’s invitation to serve Him only.

In His determination to show Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem the manner of obedience required of them, God sent Jeremiah to test the Rechabites with strong drink. The sons of Rechab, with one voice said: "we will drink no wine . . . "

The rebellious Jerusalem and Judah had consistently disobeyed God. They had turned their ears against the call to obedience.

Many people today make empty claim of Christianity, hiding under the cloak of religion to wreak havoc and bringing shame to Christendom. The doctrine of permissiveness which has dominated the entire Christendom is so much that people now throng the popular route which, sadly, leads to perdition. Our text today teaches the need to stand alone even when all around us have decided to do the wrong. We must not follow the multitude to do evil.

We must re-assess and review the type of Christianity that we profess. Do you still maintain a living relationship with the Lord? Are you still holding on to your previous convictions or you have jettisoned them because of prevailing economic realities? Those who easily compromise their faith in times of temptation and persecution are usually people who began the Christian journey without conviction.

Today, tell God to give you the genuine salvation that can make you stand in the time of storm.

Thought for today: Buy the truth and sell it not.

Condition for Pardon
Friday, February 26, 2010

TEXT: JEREMIAH 36:1-19

"It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin" (Jeremiah 36:3).

A so-called higher critic spoke scornfully of the Bible story of man’s creation.  With a grin on his face, he said "think of God taking a piece of mud in His hand, breathing on it, and changing it into a man".   In the audience was a man who had sunken low into the muck of sin, but who was now transformed by the wondrous grace of God.  He stood fearlessly to his feet and said to the critic of God’s word: "I will tell you this: God stooped down and picked up the dirtiest bit of mud in our town.  He breathed upon it by His Spirit.  It was newly created.  It was changed from a wicked wretch to a man who now hates his former sins and loves the God who saved him.  I was that bit of mud".

The story of salvation is a wonder that can only be better experienced than merely imagined.  That a man lost in sins and trespasses, dirty and wretched can be pardoned and restored into a lively fellowship with God is a great wonder indeed.  Yet this is the story of gracious and ever merciful attribute of God.

God, in our text extends His hands of fellowship to His people promising to pardon and turn away the great anger and fury that He had pronounced on them.

The condition for pardon, peace with God is still the same: "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13).  Salvation, simply put is, to acknowledge and accept your state of sinfulness, believe that Jesus died for your sins and be determined to depart from them.

Our loving God is ever ready to forgive and forget our sin on condition that we repent.

Thought for today: Repentance produces pardon.

The Jezebels Are Judged

TEXT: Isaiah 3:13-26

"Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab, The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And the LORD will discover their secret parts" (Isaiah 3:17)

From the outset, Israel was to be a privileged nation, governed by God Himself. Yet at this time, theocracy, the rule of God had been jettisoned and Israel became the worse for it. Under the reign of Uzziah, luxury had become an object of fascination, while the people, particularly the women, revelled in pride, arrogance and indulgent lifestyle. The vanity boxes of the ladies carried all sorts of cosmetics and make-ups. Assorted jewellery, earrings, nose rings and chains (leg chains, inclusive) were employed for fashion painting of the eyelids and casting special gaze on men were common. The girls mastered special styles of walking. In effect, the women concentrated on the outward appearance rather than on soul-lifting virtues. They had perfected the lifestyle of Jezebel whose name connotes worldliness and idolatory. She was always associated with evil and seduction (2 Kings 21:25; Revelation 2:20-23).

The poor, the rich and the famous in this generation imitate the proud women portrayed in the text. There is a fierce competition to outdo one another in the latest fashion. They deck themselves in flamboyant wears. They must have special gaits to be acclaimed modern. And the men too are not left out. The so-called "punks" dye their hair in multifarious colours. All these are done to the detriment of the inner man. Some apply bleaches on their natural skin. Outward beauty is cheap, being purchased with silver and gold but the beauty of the spirit is however, far more precious; it is obtainable from the Lord.

"Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the Lord, she shall be praised" (Proverb 31:30). What is the Lord's response to those who are unwilling to change? He allows degradation to set in. Such women are abased (vs. 17,24). Their men are defeated and their city left desolate. Let's possess a meek and quiet spirit (1 Peter 3:1-6). Walbery said: "A plain face is often surprisingly beautiful by reason of an inner light". Do you agree?

Thought for the day: "Beauty is only skin deep"

Make that Marriage Work
Wednesday, March 3, 2010

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 24:1-5

"When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house" (Deuteronomy 24:1).

The subject of marriage is not only sacred, it is also sensitive. The human nature which poses potent threat to God’s precepts often makes man to breach divine laws. That is exactly what informed Moses‘ pronouncement in our text today.

One, by his pronouncement that a man could divorce his wife if he became displeased with her because he had found some uncleanness in her was by no means an intention by Moses to change the demand or standard of God on this subject. Rather than give a command to divorce their wives, Moses merely permitted it, and the two are not the same thing.

The demand of God is that they should be together forever, for better or for worse. Jesus referred to Israel’s attitude as "hardness of heart" (Matthew 9:18) and warned that, "What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder" (verse 9).

Today, however, divorce is rampant as people do for every reason, a situation akin to the practice during the time of Jesus when the Pharisees demanded to know from Him whether it was right to divorce for every cause.

Love, temperance and forgiveness which are necessary to keep marital relationship till the end have taken flight in many homes and this has broken many marriages. Some other couples are merely patching up their relationship. The will of God is that your marriage should remain solid forever, and you can make it work; you must make it work.

Thought for today: Love and forgiveness will keep your marriage.

Maintain Family Integrity
Sunday, February 28, 2010

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 22:13-30

"If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel" (Deuteronomy 22:22).

After the fall of the world’s first earthly parents, human race became depraved. Ever since, man had become exposed to all forms of evil and vile affection. It is this unclean disposition that compels the necessity of divine (and to some extent, human) legislation. At the root of this is God’s desire to ensure and preserve moral purity in the family and sanctity in the marriage union.

The Almighty God in His divine wisdom and knowledge included these laws to govern proper sexual conduct and maintain purity and the sanctity of virginity. Due punishment and penalties had been prescribed for all forms of illicit sexual behaviour because sins involving intimacy cannot be described as innocent involvement in fleshly pleasures.

Paul, the great Apostle, spoke about this in his epistles. He recognized the importance of strong rules about intimacy for true children of God as immorality has the potential and power to destroy the church, the family and the nation. Six laws of chastity are given as basically fundamental to family integrity; and violations were to be punished by stoning violators to death.

As Christian believers we must avoid all sexual impurities either by thought or action. We must ensure that the family unit is not destroyed by avoidable acts of sexual misconduct.

Thought for today: God has not called us to uncleanness but unto holiness.

Holiness: Condition for God's Blessing
Monday, March 1, 2010

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 23:1-14

"For the Lord thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy: that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee" (Deuteronomy 23:14).

A pathetic observation one notices these days is the content of the prayers of many professing Christians who claim the benefits of the kingdom in their prayers without corresponding piety and righteous living. To them, God is like a magician; the name of Jesus, a magic wand which, on being uttered, yields up a basketful of blessings and grants their wishes.

We see the true nature of God from the passage for consideration today. God Almighty listed out conditions for His blessings upon the children of Israel. He expressly declared that He would walk in their midst, deliver them and give up their enemies on condition that they keep their camps holy.

God is a moral God, who created a moral world and set up moral laws to regulate relationship between Himself and the world. God has not and will not abandon this cardinal principles and allow the sons of men to trample upon His laws and still expect to receive His blessings. That is why Paul the apostle wonders how men can continue in sin and still expect the grace of God to increase in their lives.

God intends to bless His children. In our relationship with God, it is we, not God, that benefits. He has everything that pertains to our life and godliness – pardon, peace, power, prosperity, provision, protection, preservation and eventually, paradise. What we need to do to benefit from His goodness is to fulfill His conditions. With the grace of God in our lives, those conditions are not grievous to carry out.

Thought for today: God’s faithfulness to His Word is unquestionable.

The Joy Of Giving

TEXT: Genesis 14:13-24

"And blessed be the most high God, which has delivered your enemies into your hand. And he gave him tithes of all" (Genesis 14:20)

Giving is an act motivated by love. God Himself showed us the highest example of giving; "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). The Lord Jesus Christ also taught His disciples that: "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

In this passage, Abram sets a most noble example for believers by giving to the Lord. The king of Sodom and other kings with him welcome Abram from his slaughter of the enemy kings. He had accomplished what they as a group could not (verses 13-20). They counted him a hero. He was neither a king nor a large army, yet with trained servants from his household, he overcame the confederated kings and rescued Lot.

Expecting him to take the honour of the victory to himself, they offered him all the loot from the battle. Abram not only rejected the unrighteous gain but also gave credit to God, to whom belonged the glory of the victory.

This is a standard worthy of emulation. Some Christians say they are satisfied to live by "whatever means I maybe profited." But Abram also showed us here that, there is an acceptable and an unacceptable means of acquiring wealth. He eschewed covetousness knowing that a man's life is not measured by the things, which he possesses (Luke 12:15). He preferred to give tithes to God being confident that He was able to provide all his needs. All our physical needs come graciously from God and trusting Him means we shall have no lack.

Do you ever know that your material gifts will mean nothing to God if you have not first given Him your heart? You and your substance can be used by God for the benefits of mankind. That is the joy of giving.

Thought for the day: "Giving is a blank cheque to draw from the bank of heaven"

Responsible Stewardship

TEXT: NUMBERS 18:20–32

"And you shall bear no sin by reason of it, when you have heaved from it the best of it: neither shall you pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest you die" (Numbers 18:32).

Biblical records reveal that Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah, was the ancestor of the priest of the tabernacle. Jacob was not happy with Levi and Simeon and he pronounced them dispersed among the people of Israel for their violence and cruelty to the men of Shechem. The situation changed later when the tribe of Levi submitted their lives entirely to the service of God. Moses in his farewell speech, praised the tribe of Levi for being faithful to the covenant with God and for teaching the people to obey God. God always rewards faithfulness and responsible stewardship in every generation.

Our text today outlines the principle, pattern and portion of the Levites in discharging the duties assigned to them by God. The priests and the Levites were to have no earthly inheritance, for God Himself was their portion and inheritance. They were to be focused and dedicate their ambition, strength and resources for the service of the tabernacle. Levites were to live on the tithes of the children of Israel, while they in turn should pay their heave offerings unto the Lord. It was to be used to support the work of the tabernacle. The Levites must then be very careful and ensure that they handle the things of God with reverence. Neither should they pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, otherwise they die.

Giving something back to God in appreciation of what He freely gave us is the responsibility of every heaven-bound pilgrims especially because the principle of tithing is still very much relevant today. Believers must see their time, talent and resources as gifts to be dedicated to God who is the Supreme Giver. Gifts dedicated to God must be treated with respect and reverence. As responsible stewards of God’s resources, Christians must channel their lives and resources as holy and acceptable service unto God.

Thought for the day: "Dedicated life unto God is a duty and debt we all owe Him"

Numbers 18:21

18:21 for an inheritance. The Levites were not to be given a portion of the land in Canaan, once it had been conquered, such as the other tribes would have, and neither were the priests (Numbers 18:20). However, the Levites were to receive a tithe of all the increase of the other tribes, and they in turn were to render a tithe of their income for the support of the priests (Numbers 18:26-27).

NEEDED: A WILLING OFFERING

TEXT: EXODUS 25:1-22

"And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, speak to the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering: of every man that gives it willingly with his heart you shall take my offering....And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them" (Exodus 25:1-2, 8 )

Man, by nature, is full of absurdities. He likes, always to receive good and pleasurable things. In spite of God's benevolence towards him, he is most unwilling to give, unless it is extracted from him. But for a person that will walk with God acceptably, he will not only accept to give, he should be ready to give willingly, for only such is the offering acceptable to God.

In our text, God instructed Moses to tell the people of Israel to bring their offering unto Him, but made it clear that only offerings that were willing were to be taken on His behalf. The offerings to be brought by the people were to be deployed in worship and service of God, and in building a sanctuary unto Him. God's work, however, suffers a lot today because many worshipers do not give to God and where they do; they do so reluctantly and give sparingly. Such worshipers always harbour the erroneous belief that whatever they give goes only to church leaders and founders. But God made it clear here that whatever is brought to His house is meant for Him. He commanded them to bring both money (gold, silver and brass) and materials (blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, etc). God's commandment in Malachi is further proof of divine ownership of tithes and offeringss: "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house...." (Malachi 10a).

It then implies that those who give to God are promoting or sponsoring the work of God. Not only that, those who pay their tithes and offerings are also honouring God (Proverbs 3:8 ). Do you want to be prosperous in a manner that glorifies God? Become a cheerful and bountiful giver from today.

Thought for the day: "Giving to God is the highest - yielding portfolio"

Avoid That Trap!

TEXT: LUKE 4:1-15

"And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God" (Luke 4:4)

Hunters who set traps for animals do so not because of their love and care for those animals but to catch them and possibly kill them. They do it to entice and destroy them. Baits are put in traps to entice and kill their victims. Satan uses different kinds of attractions to distract people and ensnare them. Jesus says, “the thief cometh not but for to steal, and to kill and to destroy…” (John 10:10).

The devil tried to make Jesus Christ satisfy His hunger in an ungodly and illegitimate way but He wisely said that man shall not live by bread alone; but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Satan also demanded worship from Christ and to use His power for vain glory, but Christ defeated him by the word of God. Happily, the Saviour overcame the temptations of the devil.

Temptation is a common experience of every one since the fall in the Garden of Eden. It is an enticement to do evil and sin against God. Circumstances of life are generally the means the devil uses to gain an inroad into every heart. Many of our desires may be normal and good; yet, God wants us to satisfy them in the right and legitimate way.

Every situation has the potential for possible temptation from Satan. Believers must be careful and watchful not to fall into temptation. Christ overcame and lived a holy life, so we can. An attempt to fulfil legitimate desires outside of God’s will is a manipulation of the devil to sin against God. To avoid his trap, we must constantly cross-check all suggestions and align them with the word of God.

Thought for the day: "Prayerfulness and watchfulness give the victory"

Praise That Enthralls

TEXT: PSALM 147:1-20

"Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely" (Psalm 147:1)

There is a direct relationship between enthralling praise and supernatural intervention. The Bible is replete with such proven examples. Jehoshaphat praised the Lord and the confederacy of enemies against Judah scattered. The Lord Jesus Christ thanked God at Lazarus’ grave and the dead man came back to life. Paul and Silas sang praises too. To those who praise the Lord from truly transformed hearts, God often responds with immediacy. Real praise brings the power of God to bear in our world.

David didn’t praise God just because it caught his fancy. His praise was borne out of an intimate relationship with God, a keen awareness of His majesty and a tacit acknowledgement of His great deeds. He acknowledged God as great in power and understanding. He blessed the Lord for sending forth His commandment upon the earth. Praises ignite God’s power.

Accepted praise cannot be acted out. It is a voluntary acknowledgement of the wholesome nature of the Almighty that is worthy of infinite adulation. Acceptable praise needs be sincere, relational and enthralling.

Do you find it difficult sustaining your praises and thanksgiving before the Lord? Then ask the Lord for a walk in the spirit that compels an instinctive praise and thanksgiving even in the face of stiff challenges. From today, give praise a prominent place in your prayer. Let your praise outstrip narrow supplications and self serving prayer schedule. You will surely discover the awesome power that moves mountains.

Thought for the day: "Real praise has the capacity to open doors and confound adversaries"

Salvation For All

TEXT: JOHN 4:1-26

"But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14)

Salvation is a free gift of God to all. It has to do with a conscious and complete turning away from evil, disobedience and all sinful practices to receive forgiveness and pardon from God. Genuine salvation from sin is only possible and available to those who sincerely repent and exercise faith in Christ’s atonement.

The passage today is a dramatic change that occurred in the life of the Samaritan woman. Traditionally, the Jews and Gentiles had no dealings with each other because of racial and religious discrimination. Jesus had no reason to live by such racial and cultural restrictions. He therefore gave the Samaritan woman a chance to hear a message that changed her life completely.

Salvation is a free gift of God for all. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8 ). The wages of sin is so heavy and the price too high for anyone to pay. Many people reckon themselves to be Christians who had no record of genuine salvation, and their names not in the book of life. Keeping the ceremonial laws, moral living, religious observances, and good works cannot secure salvation for everyone. We are saved not because of what we can do but because of what Christ has done.

Christ paid the price for full and free salvation. The provision has been made available; you can come now to receive God’s free gift which is made available for all. Religion saves no one. It is total repentance from sin and faith in Christ’s substitutionary atonement that brings true and enduring salvation.

Thought for the day: "Salvation is generously and freely provided by God for all"

He Alone Can!

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 2:1-11

"The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them" (1 Samuel 2:7,cool

A group of Christians was out on evangelism in the city of Benin, Edo state, Nigeria. As they moved from house to house preaching the gospel of Christ, they got to a particular family that was given to idol worship. The family had daily prayed and made sacrifices to the family idol which was kept somewhere in the compound. In that compound was a child who was crippled from birth. When the team got to the house, they met the mother of the house and presented the gospel to her. As she laid claim to her religion and god, the leader of the team challenged her with the power of Christ to heal her lame child. He said they would pray and the child would be healed but she must agree to give her life to Jesus and abandon the idol. She agreed. The group prayed and instantly, the crippled child got up and walked! As a result, the whole family gave their lives to Christ and destroyed the dumb idol.

Many look up to helpless gods for help and fail to realise that whatever help and miracle they need can only come from God through Jesus. Hannah, for many years, had battled with the pain and reproach of barrenness but it became a thing of the past through prayer. The passage for our meditation is her prayer of thanksgiving and praise to God who is mighty, sovereign and powerful. He is reliable and unfailing.

Instead of plunging into more problems leading to greater frustration and despair, you can find solution to whatever challenge you are facing if you trust Him. God is our refuge and strength always.

Thought for the day: "It only takes trust in God and courage to overcome the challenges of life"

Between Substance And Shadow

TEXT: ACTS 4:1-12

"Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead..." (Acts 4:8,10)

It is not difficult to find, as you go from one assembly to the other, Christians who profess to have been baptized in the Holy Ghost. What is however very disturbing is that many of these Christians seem not to have any other evidence of the experience other than speaking in tongues. Their lives are empty, dry, fearful and shallow.

Peter and John in our text had been arrested on account of the undeniable and spectacular healing of the lame man at the temple gate. They were questioned as to the authority and power behind the miracle. It is interesting to see Peter who once cringed with fear and couldn’t stand up for Christ even before a maid, now boldly declaring the gospel with boldness. Something had happened to him! The Holy Ghost had come and all fear was gone!

When we truly have the baptism of the Holy Ghost, we will speak in tongues. It will not be a dry, listless and empty gibberish but a divinely inspired language! Far beyond that, we will become more bold and fearless in the preaching of the gospel with greater effectiveness. Our prayers will become more dynamic, refreshing and effectual and our Christian lives will be rid of all dryness, drudgery and flabbiness. We will be on fire for the Lord! This is the experience the Lord promised us.

What then, have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? If not, don’t you think you need Him? Don’t you think you should tarry and pray in faith? Remember, the promise is equally for you. Let’s get the real thing and be made fearless for Christ!

Thought for the day: "The enduement of power, not theatrics, authenticates real Spirit Baptism"

The Grim Reaper!

TEXT: 1 KINGS 2:1-11

"So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David" (1 Kings 2:10)

"Everything that has a beginning surely has an end." This is a well known saying. Life, no matter how long or short, must certainly end one day. Sadly, we often don’t want to think of this. But it is something inevitable. We must all face the reality of the end of life one day.

From our text today, we find the curtain drawn for David. As we reflect on this, we are quick to remember the once young, swift, shepherd boy, full of life, strength and talents. We remember his musical skills and poetic gifts that he deployed in the many songs he composed. We remember the very brave shepherd boy who stood up against the lion and the bear in defense of the sheep in his fold. We remember the lad with a strong faith that took out Goliath and delivered his nation from reproach and threat.

The life of David, in short, had been full and memorable. He had his fair share of life’s trials and troubles as he often had to run from his arch enemy, Saul and at other times, from his son, Absalom. The end came to him just like it comes to all and sundry.

For David, it was good that he knew the end would come and he had lived his life with the consciousness of this fact. There are many, however, who live as though the end would never come for them. They waste every opportunity that life presents them, misuse their chances and talents and are so careless with life.

In preparation for the end, you must be born again and live a victorious life. Once this is done, go ahead to spend every moment in such a way that counts for God in time and eternity.

Thought for the day: "It is appointed unto men once to die…"

Simply Off Limits

TEXT: 1 CORINTHIANS 5:1-13

"Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:6,7)

In the treatment of some serious infectious diseases like cancer and diabetes, it may be required at times, to cut off a seriously affected part of the body to stop the disease from spreading in order to save the life of the individual. This aptly illustrates how the deadly disease of sin ought to be treated once it is detected in the Body of Christ. If sin is left without being dealt with, it will soon spread its deadly poison to the whole body, thus, stifling life out of the church.

The Corinthian believers busied themselves with unnecessary controversies and contentions over preferred leaders and prided themselves over the many spiritual gifts present in the church. Apostle Paul was quick to point out the great danger threatening the very existence of the church if sin was not quickly and decisively dealt with. The unrepentant culprit was to be immediately excommunicated from the church so that his evil act does not spread in the church.

There are many people who have wrong ideas regarding church discipline. They think it to be an act of deliberate witch-hunting and of victimization and not of love. Church discipline is an act of love because it helps to preserve purity in the church and so safeguards her life, power and integrity in Christ.

As members of the Body of Christ, we have the responsibility to ensure that we keep the Body pure and free from all corruption. We need to personally watch over our individual lives to see that we do not become agents of corruption in the church by indulging in sin. Neither should we become unduely sympathetic and protective of others to hide and cover up their sins. In the long run, it will eat us up like cancer if we do.

Thought for the day: "Sin is a deadly virus that must be surgically removed"

On Your Guard Please!

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 21:1-8

"And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel" (1 Chronicles 21:1)

When an avowed enemy suddenly turns to behave nicely towards you as a friend, you need to be more careful because he definitely has something dangerous up his sleeves! If you become so relaxed as to let down your guards, you won’t know when he will deal the deadly blow on you. One thing Christians must know about life’s battles and our arch enemy, the devil, is that he never gives up easily and that he employs very cunning devices.

David was very close to the end of his life and ministry. He had seen many battles and emerged victorious over them all. But the devil never gave up on him. He cornered him in a very subtle and unsuspecting way. He came up with the idea that David should take the census of the nation. He must have advanced different seemingly convincing reasons to make David do this, such that David turned down the opposition of Joab and his counsellors. Satan’s target was not just David, but the whole nation of Israel. David fell for this carrot and Israel suffered for it.

Now, nothing on the surface is wrong with taking a census. And indeed, this was not the first time this would be done. But then, everything is wrong with whatever idea Satan is suggesting to you. You need to check up your heart very sincerely when an idea comes to you. What is the real motive behind it? It may appear nice, harmless and laudable on the surface but if the hidden motive is to advance pride and selfish interests, then it must be noted that everything is wrong with the idea.

Safeguard yourself from Satan’s cunning onslaught. Close-up the door of your heart to any of his suggestions. Be open to God and the wise counsels of His children so as to overcome all the wicked darts of the devil.

Thought for the day: "He who is open to wise counsels will be saved from bitter regrets"

Loyalty In All Seasons

TEXT: JOSHUA 1:12-18

"And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go. According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses" (Joshua 1:16,17)

People usually put up different reactions when there is a change, particularly in leadership. While some are excited with the change and are ready to move on with the new leader, some are cold, reserved and not too keen to move along. They prefer to wait and watch, not being too sure what the change would evoke. Change is inevitable and we must learn to quickly adapt to it especially when it is brought about by God.

The response of the children of Israel to the charge of Joshua as he assumes the new leadership role after Moses is most challenging. They all, with one voice, pledged their undivided loyalty to Joshua. They must have seen his appointment as divine and must have realised that their corporate success in possessing the Promised Land depended on their accepting the divinely appointed leader and rallying round him. They must have learned valuable lessons from their history and by experience, known how costly and damaging rebellion and disunity was. To be able to confront the more organised and experienced armies of the enemy nations, they knew they needed all the support they could get from God and their leader.

We must learn to accept change when God decides to bring it about. Rebelling against God’s choice will only be to our hurt. And in accepting the new leader, we must not make the mistake of trying to compare his gifts and leadership style with those of the previous leader. He may not have as much gift as the past leader, but he has a divine mandate to accomplish in your life. We are not just helping him to succeed when we do this; we are equally helping ourselves to reach our goal of the Promised Land.

Thought for the day: "Rebellion and disunity will retard our onward journey"

Born Like No Other!

TEXT: MATTHEW 1:18-25

"But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost" (Matthew 1:20)

There are many things that made the birth of Christ very unique. It was foretold many years before He was born and every detail was fulfilled as accurately as they were predicted. His birth made angels sing, drew the attention of shepherds, brought wise men from the east and unsettled powerful monarchs. His coming changed the times and seasons such that the world’s dating system changed.

But the most outstanding aspect of His birth was that it was virgin. This truth is revealed in our text today. Joseph was surprised to find his fiancé, Mary, pregnant. Unable to bear this, he decided to break the relationship. It took the intervention of God’s angel to make him understand that Mary’s pregnancy was divinely arranged. She was carrying the would-be Saviour of the world.

Denying Christ’s virgin birth would be denying His deity and sinless nature. The implication of this would be that Christ was not qualified to die for, and be the Saviour of the world. But thank God, we know that the fact of His virgin birth is undeniable. Jesus is that Seed of the woman who alone was qualified to bruise the head of the serpent. And that was exactly what He did on the cross of Calvary.

Believing in the doctrine of the virgin birth of Christ is key to believing His death, burial and resurrection. There is no way one can be saved and benefit from His vicarious death except through these. He alone saves from sin and the consequences of it - sickness, disease, satanic yoke, oppression, death and eternal damnation in hell. His mission is to “save His people from their sins.” He had no other mandate than this. If you will believe Him today, He will save you completely.

Thought for the day: "He was born like no other because He had a mission like no other"

Courage Rewarded!

TEXT: JUDGES 1:9-15

"And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife" (Judges 1:12)

“If attempting a task is dangerous; if it has never been done, I will think how it can be done if it will save a soul”, so remarked a Christian speaker whose intent was to stir up the fearful hearts of his audience who were unwilling to rise up and make needed decisions important for their souls and those of others. Challenges help draw out the latent energy in every man. Without challenges, the innate qualities and strength on the inside of man are left redundant and uncharted.

Caleb was a man well respected in the land. He had great inheritance among the people because he followed the Lord with great courage. The name of Caleb’s daughter is Achsah and the man that loved to have Achsah as wife was Othniel. Caleb wanted to be sure Othniel truly loved Achsah. As it was commonly done in ancient times, he challenged the suitor to the dangerous task of fighting the Canaanite city of Kirjath-sepher to take it. Afterall, love that would not attempt hard tasks and that would run away from danger is nothing but feeble. Induced by the promise of having Achsah as wife, Othniel rose up, conquered the city and she was given to him.

The challenge we receive in the Word of God to love the Lord our God with all our hearts and strength (Luke 10:27) demands more than a show of fleeting emotion of human affection.

Our love for God is shown in toils we are ready to make in our obedience to His Word. His promise of eternal life with Him in heaven should serve as an incentive to brace up for any persecution, trial and temptation that may come our way as we journey on!

Thought for the day: "He cannot indeed be called a captain who has never fought a battler"

Our Obligation To Worship

TEXT: LUKE 4:16-32

"And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read" (Luke 4:16)

A family was having early morning devotion somewhere at the back of their big house. Another woman sang a hymn cheerfully as she gathered firewood to cook dinner for her household under the thatched roof of a shed that served as a kitchen in her rural home. A group of factory workers met in the factory restaurant for Lunch-hour fellowship. Though we may worship God anywhere, there is no substitute for collective worship in God’s house.

Our Saviour was brought up in Nazareth where He sometimes retired after extensive outreaches in Capernaum and its environs. He attended a worship service, so to say, in the local sanctuary and read the text for the day, although He knew more than the teachers and the aged ones in the assembly. He did not despise collective worship with them. In fact, it was His practice to go to the synagogue on Sabbath days.

Today, many so-called Christians do certain other things right except attending regular Sunday worship service. They ask: “Can I not worship God in my house? Why do I need to go to the place of worship?” Some say, “I had a prayer vigil throughout Saturday night; therefore, I will not go to worship on Sunday”. Some in many places shun regular public fellowship with God’s people because of the fear of persecution. Some give excuses of “essential secular duties” while some others find faults with a member or minister in the place of worship, and therefore refuse to attend fellowship.

It must be noted that it is our sacred duty to God to collectively worship with His people on the Lord’s Day. There are manifold blessings that attend worshiping together with the saints.

Thought for the day: "Where two or three are gathered together in His Name, there He is"

Harvest Time

TEXT: RUTH 1:19-22

"So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest" (Ruth 1:22)

Harvest times are times of ingathering of crops from the field. In the New Testament, it represents the winning of souls into the Kingdom through evangelistic efforts. It also refers to the day of reckoning when angels will gather the righteous into the kingdom of God to the exclusion of all wicked men. Harvest is supper time for the righteous, a time of rest, and of receiving a rousing welcome from angels and saints in heaven.

Naomi arrived from the land of Moab in the beginning of barley harvest. She had spent long years there and as is usual with many that became disenchanted about prospects in a foreign land, she decided to return to her native land in Bethlehem-judah. To her amazement, upon arrival, the inhabitants of the land appeared to be in expectation of her and received her with great joy.

The story of the return of Naomi is reminiscent of the Bible account of the events that shall unfold on the last day. Men shall come before the throne of God bare and without their riches, earthly gains or laurels. Only their works shall follow them. The righteous shall shine as the stars, their works of faith, righteous deeds and record of souls won into the kingdom shall follow them as they are joyfully welcomed by myriads of holy angels and saints in heaven. Yet, all unprofitable men shall be cast out into outer darkness.

Surely, God will demand an account of our living here when we appear before Him. Now therefore is the time to turn to the Lord and do works that count for eternity, for the harvest time is fully here.

Thought for the day: "The diligent reaps the harvest of his labour"

Spiritual Satisfaction

TEXT: JOHN 4:27-42

"Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work" (John 4:34)

The late Theodore Roosevelt (former United States President) was quoted as saying: “The best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” We make bold to add that the only work on earth that is worth doing with all of our mind and strength and with all of our soul and spirit is the work of the Father.

In our text, the Saviour was on a journey to Galilee and it was about meal time. Being thirsty and physically tired because of the journey, He sat on the curb made around the well to wait for the next caller at the well who might be kind enough to draw out water for Him to be refreshed, while His disciples went to buy food. In the meantime, they returned from the town to find the Lord ministering to a Samaritan woman by the well with such strength and enthusiasm that betrayed His weariness. They wondered whether someone had brought food for Him to eat. But Jesus replied: “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me…”

Eating and drinking were secondary matters with Jesus. Doing the will of God, preaching the Word and doing service that is entirely devoted to God, give as much strength to the soul as does food to the physical body.

Our needs naturally range from simple daily bread to more complex issues like a desire for social relevance, material success and personal significance. Many are ready to pay a very high price for this temporary satisfaction to the neglect of their never-dying souls. Yet, Christ alone can meet our deepest heart needs. Without submitting to His will for our lives, we starve our souls spiritually and we perish. Let us thirst and hunger only for the things that answer to His holy will, for He has promised to satisfy every hungry soul.

Thought for the day: "Doing His will should be the burden of every longing soul"
