The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has described the 2015/2016 Edition of Anambra State Academicals as being very successful while assuring that his government will intensify its support to the hosting ministries to ensure that next year's edition will be greater.

The finals of the State Academicals held over the weekend at Rojenny International Stadium, Oba witnessed the emergence of Community Secondary School Isuaniocha and Girls Secondary School, Ogbunka as winners of the male and female categories respectively.

Presenting the trophies, Gov Obiano said his administration revived the Academicals with the aim to develop schools sports and groom talents that will fly the colours of the state in future sporting events both at national and international levels.

The very interesting finals saw Community Secondary School, Aguluezechukwu, the Boys Champions, beat their opponent 4-3 on penalty shoot-out while Ogbunka Girls beat Anglican Girls, Ogidi 1-0 in regular time.

While the winners went home with the Prize money of N500,000 each, the runners-up received N300,000 each.

In third place with N150,000 prize money, were Community Secondary School, Nando for Boys category and Emeka Aghasili Secondary School, Nise for girls category.

Impressed by display of special skills, Obiano also announced the prize money of #20,000 each for the Most Valuable Players, Highest Goal Scorers and Best Goal Keepers in the respective categories while the best behaved teams got #50,000 apiece.

It's worthy of note that in response to Obiano's directive to every member of the State Executive Council to adopt a school and prepare them for 2015/2016 Anambra State Academicals, the Honourable Commissioner for Housing and Urban Renewal, Engr Frank Offor adopted Girls' Secondary School Ogbunka who are the cup winners in the female category.

Anambra State Academicals was put together by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Entrepreneurship and Sports Development headed by Prof Kate Omenugha and Dr (Barr) UJU Nworgu respectively.

The final games witnessed huge turn out of political appointees, football lovers, young people and school children as well as teachers, guardians and parents.
