Jun 30, Elizabeth Kortright, later Elizabeth Monroe, first lady to U.S. President James Monroe, was born.

Jun 30, Ada H. Kepley of Effingham, Ill., became America's first female law school graduate.

Jun 30, Lena Horne, American singer, was born in Brooklyn, NYC. She later appeared in the films "Stormy Weather" and "Death of a Gunfighter."

Jun 30, Susan Hayward, actress, was born.

1936
Jun 30, The novel "Gone with the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell was published in New York.

1974
Jun 30, Alberta King (b.1903), mother of Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated in Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia by Marcus Chenault, a twenty-one year old from Ohio who claimed that "all Christians are my enemies."

1984
Jun 30, Lillian Hellman (b.1905), writer, died in Massachusetts. Her work included the play "The Little Foxes" (1939), and her memoirs "Scoundrel Time" (1976) and "Pentimento" (1973). The 1977 film "Julia" was based on a chapter from Pentimento which described Muriel Gardiner, an American medical student at the Univ. of Vienna active in anti-Nazi resistance. In 2005 Deborah Martinson authored “Lillian Hellman: A Life with Foxes and Scoundrels." In 2012 Alice Kessler-Harris authored “A Difficult Woman: The Challenging Life and Times of Lillian Hellman."

1995
Jun 30, In a Greensburg, Indiana, a mobile home fire killed the 3-year-old son of Kristine Bunch. She was arrested in 1996, accused of setting the fire and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. In 2012 she was released following 16 years behind bars for a murder she said all along she didn't commit. The Indiana Court of Appeals had ordered the local court to allow Bunch's release on bond while she awaits a second trial.

Jun 30, Beatriz Merino (55), Peru's first female PM debuted, pledging to bring discipline and austerity to the beleaguered government amid hopes her appointment will help salvage Alejandro Toledo's presidency.

Jun 30, In San Francisco a woman 28 was punched in the early hours and then robbed of her purse and cell phone. The attacker then returned and kicked her in the face in an event that was captured on video. On July 26 police arrested Christopher Porter-Bailey of Oakland on suspicion of robbery and assault.
