We are located in Ibadan, Oyo State. We produce and supply you with Treated Dwarf Giant Elephants Plantain Sucker with delivery to your destinations in Nigeria........ Musa-Paradisiaca is the botanical name which are the best variety that produce the market standard.. Call Mr.Kenneth on 08038623884. We are also available on WhatsApp on 08038623884

Spacing

The recommended spacing is 3 m between the plantain rows and 2 m within the row (in other words. 3 m x 2 m). An alternative is 2.5 m x 2.5 m. If spaced 3 m x 2 m, 1 hectare should contain 1667 plants, but with a spacing of 2.5 m x 2.5 m, it should contain 1600 plants. Rows should be straight in flat fields to give plants the maximum amount of sunlight. However, on sloping land, rows should follow the contour lines in order to decrease soil erosion.

Plantain is known to grow only in regions with tropical climate. So, if you want to start your own plantain farm, you must make sure you acquire suitable land with the right soil composition for your plantain farm. On the average, you might need at least 2 hectares of land if you want to go into commercial plantain farming. Once you have been able to secure a farm land, the next thing that you should do is to prepare the land. In preparing your land for your plantain farm you might have to adjust the PH value of your farm land if it is not suitable. Also in preparing your land for plantain farming, your laborers would have to dig holes all over the land where the suckers (plantain seeds) will be planted.
Source for suckers (plantain seeds)

One key factor that can affect your plans to start your own plantain farm is how to source for suckers (plantain seeds) in large quantities. One good thing about plantain farming is that once you are able to get started, the farm can be sustained for over 3 decades without sourcing for new suckers (plantain seeds). Plantain grows rapidly and they reproduce without stress once they are planted in a suitable land.

Hire Laborers

Running a plantain farm is not a business that an individual could run alone. You would need laborers to help you. You would need laborers to help you in clearing and preparing your farm land, you would need laborers to help you in planting the plantains, you would need laborers to help you in watering your plantain farm, you would need laborers to help you weed your farm and also to help you during harvest.

8. Disease and pest control Black sigatoka is the major disease attacking plantains; nematodes and stemborers are the major pests. Black sigatoka is a leaf spot disease caused by the fungus Mycosphaerel/a fijiensis. All known plantain cultivars are susceptible to this wind-borne fungus. Leaves first show yellow spots which later turn brown and black. Ultimately the leaf tissue becomes necrotic and dies. In this way entire leaves become nonfunctional and in many cases, bearing plants are left with hardly any green leaves at maturity. Photosynthesis is reduced and small bunches (sometimes with undeveloped fingers) are produced. Yield losses are estimated at between 30 and 50 percent.

To restore fertility, the organic matter in the soil should be raised as high as possible during the fallow period by planting an improved fallow (for example, a leguminous cover crop). Otherwise the fallow crop can consist of trees which were cut down at planting time and are growing back or of Flemingia congesta which was grown between the plantain rows as a source of mulch. In addition to restoring fertility, the fallow crop should by itself completely eliminate all kinds of weeds, especially grasses. A grass fallow is not suitable as grass easily grows again and becomes a noxious weed.

Preparing suckers : Suckers are separated from their mother plant with a spade or machete. The sucker corm must be damaged or chipped. Consequently the corm should be carefully peeled with a machete. The pseudo stem of the suckers should be cut off a few centimeters above the corm. Peeling of the corm delays the development of nematode infestation, while cutting of the pseudo stem reduces bulkiness and improves early growth of the newly planted sucker.

Moko disease is a major disease of plantain/banana in Nigeria. It is widespread throughout the plantain/banana growing areas. Moko disease of banana is caused by the soilborne bacterium, Ralstonia solanacearum (Race 2). The pathogens enter the banana tree through root wounds, and quickly grow and spread throughout the entire plant blocking the channels that carry water, thereby preventing the distribution of food and water.visit our website: www.sedulushost.com/kenfarm.com.ng

Can somebody make plantain or banana farming a business in Nigeria?
Sure! Plantain/bananas growing is a big business in Nigeria. The first thing is that if you are going for mass production, you should look for a market. Here in Nigeria, we have a ready market; we have the mile12 market which is one of the biggest markets in the sub region because buyers come from lagos etc to buy plantains and other food stuff. Because of this the demand for plantain seedlings is very high since people have realized that it is a big business and are ready to open big plantations. The main problem here is the suckers, so even if you go only into the multiplication of plantain and bananas seedlings, you will have the market.

Suckers are planted immediately after field preparation. Plant holes are prepared with a minimum size of about 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm. Care should be taken to separate the topsoil from bottom soil. The sucker is placed in the hole and its corm is covered, first with the topsoil and then with the bottom soil. The diseases of Musa include the following:
1. Rhizome Rot and Tip-over : This bacterial disease, which is also known as head rot or snap-off is common among plantains in Africa and is caused by Erwinia Carotovera and Erwinia Chrysanthemi. It occurs during very rainy seasons when the plant is water logged, and affects the planting material. The symptom of this disease is an evil-smelling wet rot of the corm or suckers. On the adult plantain and banana, there may be sudden yellowing of the leaves, followed very shortly by the death of the plant sections of the pseudostem and the corm clearly show the symptoms of this disease
2. Black Sigatoka Disease: This disease is caused by mycosphaerella figiensis. In plantains, it is characterized by the appearance of large brownish steaks, 1-2mm long and 1mm wide on the underside of the leaves. These patches are particularly visible when the leaf is viewed against the light. In the absence of control, these streaks, which are numerous Coalesce, with black necrotic patches appearing on the topside of the leaf. The blade edges, which are often the most affected areas, tend to fold back on themselves.
3. Bunchy Top Disease: This disease is caused by banana bunchy-top virus-Magee. The Musa plants may show the symptoms of bunchy top at any stage of their growth. The leaves of a badly infected plant are bunched together at the apex of the plant and a rosette is formed. The further elongation of the leaf stalks is arrested and therefore the leaves of infected plant stand more erect than of normal ones.
Infected plants are markedly stunted and they do not usually grow taller than two or three feet. Usually the infected plants do not bear any fruit other diseases include pseudostem wet rot, Moko disease (Bacterial wilt), Cucumber Mosaic, Cordana leave spot and chlorichium leaf speckle disease (CTA, 2005).
4. Panama Disease:
-This disease, also known as Fusarial wilt, banana wilt and vascular wilt, is cause by Fusarium Oxysporum former cubense. This is one of the commonest of banana in the world (Pandey, 2006). The characteristic symptoms of the disease are sudden wilting of the plants as a whole or the collapse of their individual leaves. The leaves become chlorotic, the petioles collapse and the leaf lamina hang downward and wither. Generally, the wounded rhizomes and sucker are affected due to easy entry of organism through these wounds
Utilization
The benefits of banana and plantain to man cannot be over¬¬¬¬-emphasized they serve as both domestic food items and industrial raw materials. The greatest use for fresh fruit of bananas and plantains in the tropics used to prepare various types of mashes
Nutritionally, plantain and banana are good sources of carbohydrate. They are also rich in protein, potassium. Pro-vitamin A ( carotene), minerals and fiber Gastro intestinal disorders like diarrhoea and vomiting can be treated with plantain and banana. The peel could be used for the production of biogas through the process of anaerobic digestion (Ogazi, 1996).
Industrially, they are fermented for the production of beer, wine and ethanol. They are also dried and processed into flour: used in the production of bread, cake, and biscuit. They are also used in the production of chips and other snacks[b]The diseases of Musa include the following:

MERITS OF PLANTAIN
Plantain is also a diuretic so is useful for kidney and bladder problems. It is taken throughout the day as a tea to help the kidneys and bladder. It is used in bed-wetting challenges. It also helps dropsy and water retention. Sometimes diuretics should be teamed with a demulcent herb to buffer the effects on the kidneys. There is no research or recommendations that taking plantain tea requires ones. Actually, plantain itself is a demulcent also.
