One of the benefits we gain as we follow Jesus is having the light of life. It is this reward I want us to examine. This benefit of following Jesus is revealed to us by him in the scripture: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12 Note that Jesus clearly meant by this statement that without the light of life we are bound to walk in darkness. Yet, He was certainly not referring to physical darkness, for which God has provided other forms of light. He was referring to the darkness that influences a person's life spiritually. This darkness seeks to darken our understanding of life. It seeks to corrupt our concepts of life and of God. It work to obscure the reality of eternity from our consciousness. It promote rebellion against God in and around our lives. It is in order to live free from the entanglements of this kind of darkness that we particularly require the Light of Life. Note also that the 'light' which Jesus offers to us as an antidote against spiritual darkness which plagues the earth is the light "of life." This means that this light is the kind that associated with life. What does this means? The light Jesus is speaking about emanates from life. It is light that a person carries by virtue of the life he or she lives. Therefore, a person must first posses the necessary life before he or she can have this light. It is an inherent quality of life. The light serves life. It is the revelation of truth that informs the decisions and choices of a person's walk in life. It is the illumination that frames a person's convictions, which in turn define his or her disposition to issues, order of priorities in life, conduct, and composure. It conditions his or her overall personality. It affects his or her affections, tastes, and appetites, and dictates his or her course in life. |
