If you have never attended a Nigerian wedding, then you are missing. Weddings are usually a big affair in Nigeria as they are grand, entertaining, funny and dramatic.

People do not attend parties simply because of the party rice that is being served there. Instead, they do so in order to ease the stress of the week as they know they are bound to see something funny there.

Nigerian weddings are not to be missed; that is where you get to keep a tab on the fashion trend in the society as you can be sure you would see people of all calibre rocking and slaying in fashionable outfits.

Nigerian weddings are usually packed with interesting people, and if you are attending with a friend and gist partner, there would be enough gist to tap there. The couples may be too busy to notice the things going on but the guests would always capture some of these interesting moments and keep them in their memories forever.

There are some funny things that you would observe at a Nigerian wedding, check out some of these things below and let us know if we missed anything out:

1. The bride is always late
When you attend lots of Nigerian weddings, you would get to know that the brides usually come in late. The relatives, guests, groom and his friends get to the venue before the bride ever does. In strict churches, the pastor starts the program without the bride and expect her to join as soon as she arrives.

The brides always claim the makeup artist messed up or they had issues with traffic. Like they did not choose the day themselves.

2. The sermon could be about the bride if she shows skin
Some preachers are really stern, they do not care if the wedding is about the bride or not. They speak their minds and may lash out at the bride and her maids if they dress inappropriately.

Some churches avoid this scenario by asking the bride to present the things she would wear at the church before the chosen date. It is only at a Nigerian wedding that the bride may not be allowed to enter the church if she is not properly dressed.

3. The sermon could be long at times
Biko, is it a regular church program or a wedding? Some preachers need to be reoriented on this issue as they usually take long when they mount that pulpit.

The couple only sits to hear all the long and boring sermon because they cannot afford to miss the part where they actually get joined. That is what everyone wants to see, the joining and not the preaching.

Some preachers go overboard and do alter call when they know no one would step out. This is so hilarious.

4. The prolonged thanksgiving done to make money
And some churches overdo it when it is time for thanksgiving; they simply capitalize on this part of the programme and refuse to move to the next item until they have made enough money.

Whoever is controlling the programme may say the couple’s first task is providing for the house of God. They would ask them to go round the congregation with a bowl in hand to collect an offering.

5. The reception would not start at the right time
Nigerians are so gifted, we know that wedding receptions do not always start at the stipulated time because of one reason or the other.

Guests would have left the church or wherever the engagement was done to move to the reception ground. Things do not always follow the order as the master of the ceremony is usually rushed in order to have enough time.

6. Everyone is related to the couple
We must not fail to add the fact that Nigerians like famza; you would be surprised to know that people who are not friends with the couple or the family would always claim to be best friends with them on that day.

Some will dedicate their services to them as if their lives depend on it. They are the people that would disrupt the order of photograph while claiming affinity to the couples.

7. The food is hardly enough
Another thing that you would observe in a Nigerian wedding is the shortage of food. Those who are party lovers know the right time to get to the reception and get food. They also know the right places to sit that the trays of food would not be passed over their heads.

In spite of this, it would get to a point where the food would get finished. And if they happen to have extra left, you can bet there would be no meat left. So who are those people that go away with the meat at the parties?

8. Nigerians must take food items home
If your guests had enough to eat and even took food home, that means the wedding was a huge success. Nigerians believe in taking food home after the party in order to give those who could not attend. The neighbours of the celebrating families would eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner on that family.

9. If you do not wear asoebi you will not be served
Nigerian weddings could be funny at times; people naturally bond and blend with other guests the moment they see their anko. They would become friends immediately and start to flow while the event is unfolding.

When the food is being served, they pay special attention to the group of people wearing the asoebi. They also do this when souvenirs are to be shared.

10. Money must be sprayed
A Nigerian wedding will always involve the spraying of money. No matter how small the event is, there would be the dancing part that would make all guests get up and spray money. At some Nigerian parties, this is usually a competition amidst guests. Nigerians love faaji.

11. Guests leave as soon as the food is served
Nigerians do not waste time at all. The moment the food is being served and they eat, the wedding is over. Some of them may stay out of the goodness of their hearts to spray the couples money before they leave.

But basically, the ceremony is pronounced closed as soon as people eat. Who knows whether the closing prayer is being said at all? Nigerians do not wait for this part.
