Nollywood is the sobriquet for Nigeria’s film industry. The industry is currently witnessing a boom as it churns out new and exciting movies. So, there is little or no argument when it is described as the third largest movie industry in the world.

Now, a good number of Nigerians are watching Nollywood movies alongside Hollywood movies. At the same, they are visiting cinemas to watch these sterling movies made by prolific producers like Kunle Afolayan, Lancelot Imasuen, Emem Isong and Tunde Kelani, among others in locations like Lagos, Calabar, and Enugu.

Despite all these accolades, there is still a long way for these movies to go to compete favourably with Hollywood and Bollywood. This is because there are still some petty and trivial things that you see in these movies. This can easily put viewers off. In line with this, Jumia travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal identifies some of these annoying things.

Easily predictable

In some cases, the title of the movie will give you a fair idea of the plot. And if you decide to watch the movie, with 100% certainty you can tell what is happening next. Often times than not, Nigerians who watch Nollywood movies do not look forward to the climax and its resolution. Thus, due to this predictability, they easily lose interest.

Irrelevant sequels

You must have questioned why they are wasting so much time at a particular scene. The answer is that the producer wants the film to have a sequel. Definitely, you know that the movie doesn’t need one. But the thinking of the producer is different as the movie can have like 3 sequels with different[ titles.

No storyline or plot

Some Nollywood movies have no plot or storyline. It seems like they hurriedly gathered actors and actresses to just act a script that has no story. This leaves some Nigerian film enthusiasts to question why they wasted time watching the movie.

Some accident or shooting scenes are a write

Accident or shooting scenes in most Nollywood movies are a write-off. For those who are addicted to Hollywood and watch the same scene in a Nollywood film, you will be awed at the way the act is poorly done. This is a major scene that producers need to improve.

Terrible subtitles

Many Nigerians now watch indigenous language movies especially Yoruba movies. But one flaw about these movies is that it is poorly subtitled. So, the movie is restricted to those who can only fathom the language.

Too much witchcraft

Witchcraft has become one way to identify Nollywood movies and this not good for the image of the country. As a result, Many Nollywood enthusiasts frown at this very negative portrayal.

Those reasons you just mentioned are exactly why i dont watch nollywood movies.

The one that annoys me the most is that of too many sequels with different titles, pt 1&2- the kings son, pt3&4- the prince, pt5&6- end of the son of the king.
Haba!!!!

And also, they need to improve on their costumes and special effects.

And why the f*ck do they never get new and young actors....20yrs coming, queen nwokoye, mercy johnson and ebube nwagbo will still be acting the roles of secondary school girls.
Jim iyke, nonso diobi and mike ezuruonye will never leave the university.
These are roles young people should act....but hey, this is nigeria where the old never want to leave power for the next generation.

They have new actors, but these new intakes are worse. I don't watch Nollywood but I have to play them for my Grandma. You would see people in the village speaking with phony American/British accent. For Christ sake, you are in the village, act like a villager.

The new intakes are really bad. I won't be surprised if they slept with someone to get the roles.

nnah...thats true bruh.

Another one i dont get is why queen nwokoye will not be able to speak correct english when everyone else in that village, including old men that never went to school, will be speaking good english.( i've forgotten the name of that movie).
They could've just used local dialect in that movie so that it will be clear that she couldnt speak english because she wasnt bright in school.
Making everyone else in the movie speak english makes it seem like she grew up with english as her mother tongue but still couldnt speak it.

It's not new, almost all movie industries suffer from things like these even hollywood

Easily predictable
Hollywood movies are super predictable, I mean just look at all the genres;
Action: villain gets defeated , hero wins and gets the girl(e.g: bond movies, super hero flicks etc)
Thriller: villain dies, hero wins and gets the girl altho some try to be brilliant and involve a few twists but come on we can already see it a mile away(e.g: book of eli, chaos, gone girl etc)
Comedy: it always ends happily ever after(e.g: this is the end,21 jump street etc)
Horror: the villain looks like he's dead but shows up at the end so a sequel doesn't seem implausible(e.g: amityville horror, halloween etc)
Irrelevant sequels
Ah ah since 2000 hollywood efforts have been nothing but sequels, prequels, book adaptations, video game adaptations, remakes, reboots and it doesn't even matter whether it is necessary or not I even heard that new ideas are usually booted off for the "bankable" ideas ie recycled ideas
(e.g: robocop,sharknado etc)
No storyline or plot
Hehehe yea that's what the explosions, car chases and all them set piece cover is for, the fact that there isn't any reasonable plot to wrap it around (e.g: hurt locker, melancholia etc)

Some accident or shooting scenes are a write off
Well there happen to be such lack of professionalism in hollywood too they even have a name for it(bloopers)
and no movie seem to be above it( check out your favourite movie on the imdb website and check out their goofs)

Terrible subtitles
Hollywood does this too especially when they speak foreign languages(e.g: bourne identity etc)

Too much witchcraft
grin Witchcraft dey hollywood too na abi how else will you explain sylvester stallone killing a gang of dudes (holding assault rifles) using a hand gun or how will you explain why captain america can survive an explosion and building collapse

So abeg make una dey cut nollywood some slack from time to time
