Electrical Motor starters are controls designed to start and stop(ON and OFF) industrial or domestic Electrical motors .The basic rule guiding the design of an industrial or domestic motor starter is that ; Electrical motors must not start automatically .This simply means that an electric motor must be on OFF mode immediately after power outage and must remain OFF after restoration . A human operator must be responsible for switching an electric motor ON and OFF .Their are different types of motor starters ,but here we will be considering the design and development of an online motor starter .
What Is An Online Starter ?
An online motor starter is also known as a direct motor starter .It is a a kind of motor control circuit mostly used for starting motors that are rated bellow 10hp(horse power) .Electrical motors run on low and high speed . An electric motor connected to run on low speed is on a star configuration why motors running on high speed are on delta. Using a direct starter and direct configuration implies that the electric motor will start at its full speed. Direct starters should be used on motors not exceeding 10 horsepower(The horse power of a motor is directly proportional to its speed ).
