As Reported by Sitippe.com, 18 commuters escaped death on Sunday when a loaded Toyota Hiace commercial bus in which they were being conveyed, crushed a tricycle opposite St John’s Primary School, Eniong Offot, Uyo.

Six of the victims, which were severely injured were rushed to the St Luke’s Hospital, Anua Offot in Uyo.

An eyewitness who gave his name as Idorenyin, said the commercial bus with registration number AA – 161-EYF, had a brake failure, and in the process, crashed into the rear of the tricycle, with identification number: MOT/T/6233/UYY, causing all the passengers to sustain varying degrees of injury.

One of the accident victims who spoke said the bus driver was on top speed and that several warnings to get him to drive at a reasonable speed failed.

According to him, the commercial bus driver immediately took to his heels after the fatal accident.

Meanwhile, some passersby who were seen discussing the ill-fated event, however, thanked God that no live was lost.

A lady who is believed to be in her late 20’s said: “this place (the road side) is the exact spot that Eka (Mama) Ofonime normally keeps her table and sell oranges and other fruits at night… Thank God it was not at night that this accident occurred because there is no way she would have survived this”.
