Flash Fiction; Savage Night At Sea by pyrexes66: 2:50am On Aug 30, 2016
The storm started at the most unexpected time with clouds rolling, lightning flashing and thunder booming. A time when the seaman were below deck and even the barnacles and sperm whale were laying in a fit of restful complacence. The water suddenly churned and out of oblivion crawl out a monstrous breeze, except “crawling” was not quite right, it was more like ‘roar out with an intense ferocity’, a ferocity so wild it tore through the night, the way a train might tear through a seamless and floating cloud. In haste the sea men hurried up on deck, even before the cruel captain snart could call for them. This night needed no shout or call for fulfillment of responsibility, responsibility in itself was in all of the seamen heart tonight. The mast was rolled and the ship was made lighter by casting almost all the crate of boot-legged alcohol over the side of the boat. The storm roared on tipping and tossing the boat from side to side like a piece of grain exuding the Brownian motion. The seamen could not hear one another over the strength of the wind howls. The starboard of the ship was heading for jagged rock and with the force of the wind pushing its sail towards that direction the seamen and there captain could only watch with devastating horror. Captain snart in his boldness and act of heroism tried to steer the wheel of the ship away from the rock but the wheel wouldn’t give as it was stuck, the wind continue its fitful rage and the vigor with which it shook the ship and even the sea itself was a maddening one. The seamen continued to hope and pray that by some miracle the ship would swerve at the last minute from the jagged rock that could end the years of their sea faring. Captain Snart continue shouting orders that was like whispering to a friend some distance away in a crowded and noisy disco club. The ship had almost gotten to the rock and still the wind pump into it adrenaline that made the ship rush towards the rocks. Wide-eyed and breathless the seamen watched as suddenly the ship swerved from the jagged rocks, the wheels had caught at the last minute and captain snart had been able to pull the ship away from the rocks, but then the least of their problems was only what was solved as even with the jagged rocks gone the wind was achieving quite a ferocity that will make even the bravest of lion to cower and whimper in namby-pamby reverence. The tides were now quite high, causing the ship to sway side to side like a man in drunken stupor. The seamen ended up discarding everything they had just to lighten the ship and not all they could do was watch and pray for the storm to clear up. Unfortunately, the storm didn’t look like it was going to recede any time soon and it had even starting raining in long lashing strokes of precipitation and soon the ship will be filled with water and capsize. So with nothing left to do they abandoned the ship and got into the few life boats attached to the ship captain snart and the lesser captains in one boat and the seamen in the other two.
Bright lightning flashed through the sky as three boat left “THE STERLING”, the night had not quite receded as the morning still seem far away and the world, at sea, seem to have been shaken together leaving everything in topsy-turvy, the seamen watched from a distance as the sterling tired of the battering from the sea and the long strokes from the sky finally gave up and rest in the traumatic water. Captain Snart had his hat in his hand as he saw the sail of the ship for the last time. The storm continued tossing the seaman’s boat on the sea and they had to use bucket to remove the water already filling the boat to prevent the boats from meeting the same fate as the sterling, suddenly the storm seemed to reach its peak and started creating tides as high as great walls, from this the seamen could not escape and they were covered before they could make any futile attempts at fleeing the boat.
It was bright the sun showed in rich resplendence, the parakeets sang in sweet voice and the world look as if it had not just been through a rough, storm ravaged night, it was like the world never knew the seamen. As if their existence was like the mistake of a pencil to be erased completely and leaving only vague lines not enough to read the meanings of their making. Once again the world was peaceful and the calm eeriness of the world seem to have been a plot to cover its savage unpleasantness.
