1543 Sep 9, Mary, Queen of Scots, was crowned Queen of England.
1989 Sep 9, West German Steffi Graf won the women's tennis title at the U.S. Open in New York, defeating second-ranked Martina Navratilova.

1996 Sep 9, Keeping her word not to cooperate with Whitewater prosecutors, Susan McDougal was led away to jail for contempt of court, denying she was trying to protect President Clinton with her silence.

2001 Sep 9, Najwa bin laden left her husband, Osama bin Laden, in Afghanistan and returned to her native Syria, taking with her a son and her two youngest daughters. Eman, Omar's sister, was left behind with her father and siblings. Omar bin Laden (20) had left the family and Afghanistan earlier in the year.

2008 Sep 9, The 27-member EU stopped short of offering Ukraine membership during an EU-Ukraine summit hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Zardari and Afghan Pres. Karzai hosted a joint news conference and declared that they stand together against the Taliban and al-Qaida.

2009 Sep 9, In Ecuador Gloria Daniela Lopez, a Los Angeles college student, was stabbed to death in Ambato. Her body was found the next day with her throat slit. A family friend later said she had been decapitated and possibly raped. A local police investigation was said to be stalled because she was American.
2010 Sep 9, In Pennsylvania Kraft worker Yvonne Hiller of northeast Philadelphia shot and killed two co-workers after she was suspended from a Kraft Foods plant.

2012 Sep 9, In Carrolton, Texas, Franklin Davis (30) was charged with murder after confessing to the death of Shania Gray (16). Police believe he killed her to prevent her testimony at an upcoming sexual assault trial.

2013 Sep 9, In Florida Rebecca Ann Sedwick (12) jumped to her death at a former cement business in Lakeland. Investigators said she was despondent after others posted hate messages to her online. On Oct 15 police said two girls of Crystal Lake Middle School, ages 12 and 14, have been arrested for bullying Sedwick. On Nov 20 prosecutors dropped charges of aggravated stalking against the two girls.
