Forbes reports that despite the late rapper’s popularity and larger-than-life persona at the time of his death, many believed his career was just beginning.

According to records his fourth album, All Eyez On Me, was released seven months prior to his passing, and produced two chart-topping singles; the album officially reached diamond status in the US in July 2014.

While in 2010, Shakur’s estate earned $3.5 million by FORBES’ estimate, part of the cash has come from synch licenses in a list of films, TV shows and video games, Forbes said.

Following the decline on the importance of its pioneers by hip-hop culture, Shakur’s legacy seems to only increase with each generation. According to Spotify, his channel has attracted over 4 million monthly listeners, and the posthumous album 2Pac Greatest Hits has been streamed over 1 billion times. His accomampaying Facebook page boasts over 20 million likes, and at the time of writing, there were over 220,000 mentions of Tupac (including Tupac Shakur and 2 Pac) on Twitter within the past 24 hours alone.

Before his solo career took off, Shakur served as a roadie, backup dancer and emcee in the hip-hop group, Digital Underground. In 1992 he added “actor” to his resume as the star of the film Juice, which pulled in over $20 million in the box office. He then starred alongside Janet Jackson in 1993 in the romantic drama Poetic Justice, which grossed over $27 million.

Forbes gathered that before his incarcerated for a sexual assault case in 1995, it was reported that Death Row Records agreed to post Shakur’s bail in exchange for a three-album, $3.5 million contract; however, the rapper was rumored to be in debt to the label at the time of his death, despite selling $60 million worth of albums.

Many letters that the rapper had written during his time spent at Clinton Correctional Facility were auctioned off last year; the top-selling letter went for $15,000.

The monetary gains aside, Shakur’s mother, Afeni, carried on her son’s estate by creating the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation in order “to provide training and support for students who aspire to enhance their creative talents.
