WORLD messaging giant, WhatsApp,  announced some weeks ago that it would start sharing some user data including phone numbers with parent company Facebook.

WhatsApp updated its terms and privacy policy for the first time in four years which it claimed is part of its plans to test ways for people to communicate with businesses.

Whatsapp notified everyone on the latest supported versions of the app about these updates, and users were asked to tap ‘Agree’ to accept the updated terms.

However, some users have complained about sharing their data with Facebook especially the latter’s commercialisation of such data.

For those concerned about sharing their data with Facebook, there are two ways to stop Whatsapp from sharing such data.

The first method has to be done before accepting Whatsapp’s new terms of service. Rather than clicking “agree” immediately, press the “read more” option, and uncheck the box that reads “Share my WhatsApp account information with Facebook…”

And if you have accepted the new terms without unchecking the box, you have a 30-day window to rescind your decision. Go to the app’s settings menu, and then press the account tab. From there, you can uncheck the box reading “Share my account info” to stop providing Facebook with your user data.
