In line with the policy of diversification of the economy from oil to non-oil investments as being championed by the Federal Government, an Ibadan-based firm, Education Advancement Centre (EAC), has released a set of chemical products including diesel, kerosene and alum, which it made from waste plastics and cans.
The firm, headed by Mr. Muyiwa Bamgbose, launched the products at an exhibition at its Bodija, Ibadan headquarters as a sharp departure from the traditional production of such products from oil. The discovery was showcased as one of the activities marking the 20th anniversary of the organisation.
According to Bamgbose, the products, which come at a cheaper cost, will also reduce environmental degradation through the use of the non-degradable products as raw materials, adding that “rather than relying on oil which is quite expensive, the waste materials, which are available in huge quantity in our environment, are far cheaper”.
Speaking on the economic significance of the discovery, Bamgbose said that a litre of his firm’s kerosene and diesel costs N120 instead of the average of N200 they are being sold nationwide, while calling for large scale investors or manufacturers that can produce at the level that could meet the need of Nigerians.

Plastic wastes and cans are bye products of the hydrocarbon chain that's resident in crude oil. Under controlled temperature and pressure-in the absence of oxygen(pyrolysis) these and many more can be achieved. So its not an invention but a good attempt - nice trial. This procedure is extremely exothermic and will require a whole lot of energy to be utilized hence its not advisable for any interested smallscale startups
