[b]Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo's Ballon d'Oropoly could be over when football's leading individual prize changes to a new format.

The FIFA Ballon d'Or, as it is now, has existed since 2010 after FIFA's World Player of the Year merged with France Football's Ballon d'Or award.

It was announced last month that the two would now split once again, with France Football confirming this week that the Ballon d'Or would revert to its original selection panel - a group of international journalists - where the award for the last five years has also taken on board the votes of international coaches and captains.

With much tactical voting and a raft of peculiar choices , France Football have done away with these and will solely rely on the media choices - which could result in more varied winners

For example, neither Lionel Messi's 2010 Ballon d'Or or Cristiano Ronaldo's 2013 victory would have occurred had football's leading individual prize been decided solely on the journalists vote.
