Johannesburg offers visitors a whole lot of fascinating experience that will keep them spell-bound throughout their stay in the Gold City. Being one of the 50 largest urban areas in the world and also the largest city in South Africa, Jo’Burg is the vibrant heart of Africa.

Below is a list of 6 attractions that will make you fall in love with the beautiful city of Johannesburg.

1. Gold Reef City

Located just 8 kilometers from the centre of Johannesburg, Gold Reef City is one of the symbols of Johannesburg. Gold Reef City offers a wide range of experiences with its 4D Theatre, exciting casino, fascinating theme park, best restaurants… which all run 24 hours a day.

Kids can have fun with the rides at the Gold Reef Theme Park and also learning about the mining history of the Johannesburg. Don’t miss your chance of visiting as Gold Reef City is one of South Africa’s top family attractions.

2. Cradle of Mankind

The Cradle of Humankind was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The historic site occupies 47,000 hectares (180 sq mi) and it contains a complex of limestone caves. These caves contain fossils of extinct species of humans such as a 2.3-million-year-old Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed “Mrs. Ples”), found in 1947 by Robert Broom and John T. Robinson.

One of the chambers in the cave- The Dinaledi Chamber- contains over 1500 fossils, the most extensive discovery of a single hominid species ever found in Africa. The site is a great place to learn about the history and evolution of mankind.

3. Apartheid Museum

Delve into the apartheid years of South Africa with a walk in this world-class museum. A visit to the Apartheid Museum is both depressing and inspiring, emotional yet uplifting as you get to see the days of apartheid portrayed through mesmerizing, interactive displays and film footage.

The displays in the museum will leave you shocked at how the racially-discriminating regime destroyed the lives of many South Africans- its not advisable to bring children below 11 here.

4. Lion Park

The Lion Park is a wonderful place for tourists who love wildlife. Located near Johannesburg, the park- which is home to over 80 rare white lions- offers a spectacular chance to be up close and personal with lions and other animals that are indigenous to Africa.

Visitors to the park enjoy the opportunity of touching lion cubs while you pet them. Tourists also get to interact with other animals like the tamed giraffe. The attraction is open every day of the year from 8:30 am to 5:00pm.

5. FNB Stadium

Another must-see attraction is Africa’s largest football stadium- the FNB Stadium. The stadium hosts large rugby and soccer matches and big events like concerts. Also known as Soccer City- the 94,700 capacity stadium hosted the first and last match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

The stadium is significant to South Africans not only for sports but also the apartheid freedom struggle. Here the first mass rally was held following the release of Nelson Mandela from prison in 1990, and, in 1993, thousands gathered here to mourn the assassination of freedom struggle hero Chris Hani. The stadium’s design looks like a calabash, or African beer pot. The warm, earthy colours of the 94 700-seater stadium show up vividly against the urban Sowetan landscape.

6. SAB World of Beer

The South African Breweries is a must-visit attraction when in Johannesburg. It offers a fascinating introduction to the history of beer and brewing with 3D movies, floating holograms and a large screen with surround-sound to tell the tale of South Africa’s popular alcoholic beverage.

At World of Beer, visitors are taken on an entertaining and highly informative history of beer-making, from the earliest known evidence of beer-brewing in Egypt and Mesopotamia to the honky-tonk beer halls of the gold-rush era of Johannesburg
