JP LACONIC WEEKLY JOINT POEM -Theme- Since 1960 . Met the words "Naija go soon better" Since 1960, it's still not better Since the existence of self-government A strife to uphold its accomplishment . Since the flag was painted of saint and plant Men and women, voices in a loud rant Dashed hopes, even of a year old Coupled with promises to unachievable fold . Since 1960, men pledged allegiance Vain songs on vain lips, we dance the shame dance Everything seemed toilsome for the masses The battles were tough; great were the losses . Since 1960, there is no progress Everything is bleak, all is in regress My forebears' hearts once pumped with nascent pride Fifty years on, green pride on outbound ride . The government, unpalatable taste Rules besmirched, country in ruins, utter waste We wished for a better future and fame These days, its only throes of economy lame . Free! yet under undue influences Acting slyly even at fifty six Our hopes seem sunk beyond our arm stretch Still no surrender, never give up search . We left the white men thinking we would fly Now we know "glorified chickens" don't fly Almost six decades, since 1960 Many stills fail to have some empathy . Corruption has been ruling since 1960 Eroding people off their integrity Our leadership system gives pseudo-hope The masses find it difficult to cope . Corruption began to evolve Not one damn thing did the government solve Decadence evolved since 1960 Her bossom deflating, bloody sissy . People clamour for independence But still we drown in the arms of dependence Economy full of vicissitudes Yet we claim to be free from servitude . No retreat no surrender was our song Hope for better days going down the gong Independence is the term we all use Of a truth, bondage is what really rules. . Time's gone, we are fifty-six and counting, and pretending, like it's all for nothing People still living a life of despair Life comfortability is still rare . Political upheavals and mood swings To and fro, back and forth, amusement swings . War, slavery, killing, hardship but hence Since 1960, we rejoice in love and peace Finally independent against all odds A strife to wipe out all blots
Footnote- This is a brilliant mash up from 27 poets submitting couplets on the central idea and merged into quatrains by the compilation team; Oladele Taiwo.
