When we say computer fan, we mean the fan that cools your processor and ensure optimal operation. Desktop computers normally contain more than one fan. Laptops normally contain only one CPU (Central Processing Unit) fan except some older laptops or special graphics laptops that may contain more than one CPU fan; although latest set of laptops with the latest processor technology has no fan as there are no need for fans to keep them cool.

What Causes Computer Fan Noise?
When the fan noise of a computer becomes excessively loud, it is an indicator that something is wrong with your PC, and the issues should be attended to immediately. Fan noise can be due to any of these reasons:
1. Running excess programs, applications or processes
2. Using a heavy, bug-filled (error filled) or overloaded operating system
3. Overheating
4. Accumulated dust on the processor fan
5. “Wear and tear” due to accumulated usage
6. Faulty processor fan

How can the fan noise be fixed?
The solution to your fan noise depends on the cause of the noise, do well to find out the cause before fixing. Some power settings can make the CPU fan to spin too fast, you can adjust the power settings to a lower energy usage. Use the following steps to adjust the power settings:
1. Turn on the computer and wait for the PC to boot properly.
2. Click Start by pressing the Windows button
3. Type “power plan” in the Search box, in the search results, click “Choose a power plan”, and adjust your power option to a favorable one.

If the noise continues, then, shut down your computer if it is in use, if it is a laptop, it is best you consult a qualified PC engineer/technician to help you out. You could as well order for repairs here.
If it is a desktop, shut down, check your computer and ensure that all devices connected to it are disconnected, this include your VGA cable, power cable etc. The power cable is exceptionally important to avoid the risk of electric shock hazard; you could try loosing the screws, and using a blower to blow dust away from your fan. If you’ve not opened a computer system before, we don’t recommend you do that yourself as you could end up creating more problems for yourself, just use the blower and blow the fan section of your CPU.
To loose the computer, check the screws holding your computer case together and procure an appropriate screwdriver to open the case. Remove the screws opening the top or side of the case and then blow away the dust using your blower.
Now you can replace the part of the computer case you removed. Be sure to screw back the cover tightly, because if you don’t you’ll have another dust build up not long after the cleaning.
Once your CPU has been put back together, reconnect all the peripheral devices and boot. Check if your computer is in proper operating condition. By now the fan noise is supposed to be reduced to normality.
Other steps you could take to reduce PC noise include:
1. Buy a Laptop Cooling Pad
2. Use a Lightweight OS i.e. the recommended operating system for your PC.
