ROAD SIDE MECHANIC VS AUTO WORKSHOP VS DEALERSHIP Even if your car doesn't come with the most sophisticated and latest technology, your car is still the most expensive gadget you own. Therefore maintaining your car should take priority if you want it to serve you right, and the best way to maintain your car is to always make use of a trained auto technician. You really cannot afford an inexperienced hand to toy with your car! It does more harm than good, not just to your vehicle but to your wallet too. THE ROAD SIDE MECHANIC Inexperience, trial and error is usually associated with the road side mechanic. A large number of road mechanics have little experience and knowledge about the well-being of cars. Working on modern vehicles demands unprecedented talent and training. Gone are the days when car were more mechanical than electronic! The carburettors have giving way for the Injectors, onboard diagnostics is now a norm and almost every mechanical part is regulated by sensors and actuators! You can not afford to trust your car to an untrained road side mechanic. The era of trial and error is gone. For your own safety! In the bid to fix a particular problem, more problems usually arise leading to Charging for unnecessary repairs A road side mechanic diagnoses a problem, repairs it and - surprise! - the problem is still there. They then re- diagnose it as a different problem and repair that. Eventually, the mechanic repairs the original defect but charges the customer for all the repairs. Unlike the modern auto workshops and dealership, a roadside mechanic usually diagnose with his collection of experiences as well as customer's complaints. But that can never be enough because for a single complain, there is a thousand and one possible cause. Therefore there Is almost no way to pin point these correctly without running a full OBD 2 scan on the vehicle which most road side are not equipped to do. In some other instances, the road side mechanic is fully aware of other faults in your vehicle but will keep mute so as to get you to come back and pay more. Misdiagnosing something that is not faulty Sometimes to pad their bills, mechanics will tell a customer non-defective parts need to be replaced. Instead of getting your brakes resurfaced, They’ll tell you to get them replaced. Other parts of the car can be repaired, They’ll suggest replacement. Like unnecessary repairs, unneeded parts being sold to you is also a trick for major extortion. Purchase of inferior parts; the average road side mechanic in Nigeria is guilty of this. The car owner pays for authentic parts for repairs, they will not only double the price of parts, they go as far as getting inferior parts which will eventually cause more damage. Quacks would only destroy your car for you. However if you can get an experienced and trusted road side mechanic, never let go! The advantages abound, the most important been availability and turn around time. The one-on-one relationship between driver and mechanic that the road side mechanic foster can really help consumers have confidence in both the work that's performed and in the vehicle itself. Local mechanics are more willing to help you understand how your car performs and what it needs. You can ask to look under the hood or the chassis with your local mechanic, and perhaps learn something about what goes where or why a service needs to be performed. AUTO WORKSHOP Auto workshop boost of sound and well trained technicians. They pamper your car. Although their mode of service may differ when it comes to organisational structure they actually have some similarities. For every car that enters into an auto workshop, their is usually a file dedicated to it. This usually show the extend of work done on the car. It is important to know the repair history of a car, it ensures proper maintenance . Most auto workshop carry out a routine walk around and technical evaluation on a vehicle to determine the extend of damage, this is done by carrying out an OBD 2 scan and visual inspections. The technician at this point may notice other problems with the car that you didn't complain about. Although work does not start until you give your consent and pay! How ever the major issue with auto workshop is the price! Its usually on the higher side, at least when compare with the road side mechanics. The million dollar questions here is whether or not its worth it? Well as some body who have worked with an auto workshop, i would say NO! They are mostly well packaged road side mechanic workshops save for few good ones. Most auto workshop do not go for the best parts in the market i.e original equipment manufacturer's parts, Since most of them are generic i.e they do not repair a single brand of vehicle. they hardly order parts from manufacturers except in rare cases where customers specifically request for it or it is the only option! They usually go for the cheaper after market parts, of course not the inferior grade type but not just the best! Even though they are charging you for the best quality. There turn around time is another problem. They take like forever to get your vehicle fix. This is usually due to the processes involved especially if its a major repair work. They have to evaluate the car to find out the problems, make a price quotation which you have to approve and make payment before work can start. Sometimes it take like forever to generate a price quote because most auto workshop do not stock their stores with parts. It would be too expensive to do that since they don't work on a particular brand of car. Imagine having parts for Mercedes, bmw, toyota, honda, nissa etc. you can afford that! One major advantage of using auto workshop is because of the peace of mind they afford you. You can be rest assured that you car is in good hands and majority of them take responsibility for returned jobs. DEALERSHIP Dealership represent the manufacturer's service department. This is probably the best place to have your car fixed. Seriously, there is no better place! They don't just pamper your vehicle, they spoil it! Its their own. The technicians at the dealer level are specialists, they are manufacturer- trained and typically work only on your make of vehicle. What about warranties? A dealer will perform repairs for free if your car is still under warranty. Dealers are paid by the manufacturers to perform this service and require the service technician to verify the problem, so you might find that dealers are hesitant to perform warranty work for problems they have difficulty substantiating. The major issue with dealership is the price! Way more than your neighbourhood auto workshop. This is usually because they have well trained technicians who specialises on your vehicle plus dealers offer only OE (Original Equipment) parts, which represent a standard of quality and engineering that only the manufacturer can authorise. My candid advise is to make use of your dealership if you can afford it. Nothing could go wrong, especially if you drive expensive luxury cars. However it is advisable to visit your trusted road side or neighbourhood auto shop to fix your regular everyday cars. It will save you money. Maintaining your car is very important, for your safety and those of other road users, plus it saves you lots of money. Don't wait till it completely break down. www.everydaycarz.com.ng/2016/10/road-side-mechanic-vs-auto-workshop-vs.html?m=1 2 Likes 3 Shares |

I believe this depends on how much you value your safety as you pointed out. Using a dealership gives you assurance on the quality of service you'd get for your vehicle cost implications not included. While using an auto workshop might be a good idea for low budget individuals you should note that most technicians are not adequately trained and some may have apprenticed from a particular individual who may have gotten his knowledge from a road side mechanic and hence maybe not be vouch-worthy. I service my vehicle after every 5000km as I have learnt the hard way from not doing so frequently. Good one OP and thanks for the write-up. 2 Likes |

With an auto scanner in hand.. i go for road side.. would just point out the problem from my scanner and research.. and he does it cheaper than the rest.. no some "over sabi mechanics" who just ruin it all at the end of the day. A good basic scanner cost just N8k.. a road aide workmanship cost 2k/3k for already known faults.. Dealership would hold your car for weeks.. bottomline you have not learnt anything, they charge you neck deep. Auto workshop are the most wicked set on earth.. i was told to register my car for 250k before they even diagnose the fault(when i was a novice)... i had a good laugh that day.. the best joke i ever heard 11 Likes |

Hmmm!Only last week i went to scan my car,the technician showed me the problems diagnosed,as sensor 1,4 of my tyres, then one other thing he called "indomie",found in my exhaust,he said that was the reason ,my "check engine" symbol was always on my dash board.I left there to see one of the "Kazeems" by the road side, who checked the tyre pressure of my car with his barometer and found that the pressure was too high,he had to guage it according to manufacturers specification.Since then the tyre signal had disappeared from my dashboard, save the check engine still there.Abeg wetin una think abt d whole scenario? One love |

All these sensors in modern cars can vex sha. The car would go off once it detects a lil prob which no layman can diagnose. Then one mechanic go come work the car with laptop n charge u 150k after 20mins of punching keys. Bringbackourtraditionalcars biko 5 Likes |

The same Nigerians that prefer road side mechanics aka Baba kazeem are the one that tell you tokunbo cars are better than brand new cars.Let's just learn to do the right thing at times.I understand the odds at play here like the time of repair delivery, the quality of parts, and most importantly the cost. For me Ill still prefer the dealership, the auto workshops, then d roadside guys (in emergency cases where I have no other option). Wake up call to auto workshops to speed up their delivery time. 1 Like |

Exactly. Most branded auto workshops charge exorbitantly for registration before talking about fixing the said vehicle. With a scanner, you just tell your technician what and what to fix. No try and error. Esseite: |

You should always speak with facts and not bias. Alot of our local mechanics are sound and experienced, the local mechanics or road side as you call them have been with us for over 30 years. They span several generations of people taught by their predecessors and have proven to be very competent despite their apparent lack of training, equipment or ability to speak grammar like you. Just because someone does not own a posh air conditioned shop where you can relax with prostitutes and smoke weed while you re being ripped off you car by well dressed a crooks who call themselves professionals doesnt mean they re quacks. How many credible car dealers do we have in Nigeria, coscharis, Honda Place, Kia these people have one thing in common tey are car dealers and not mechanics, they dont fix cars, they only get you to buy their cars , they may have workshops and body shops but they people who work in their shops are actually your road side mechanics. They just dress them in overalls, give them id cards and teach them phonetics, some of these persons have casuals who work with them on temporary basis. Back in 2008 my uncle took his 2003 accord to Honda place in Abuja for repairs , he had to register the car first with N10,000= after that a check was done and his bill was estimated as N635,000= for what? Another friend of mine took his 1996 Mitsubishi carisma to Mitsubishi dealer ship in Abuja to get his clutch kit replaced, rather than the dealership telling him the truth that the model is no longer supported, they collected N50,000= from him to replace the kit. The guy at the dealer went to Apo Mechanical village to rivet the old clutch plate because it was scarce at that time. imagine N50,000 to rivet a clutch plate in 2006! It was a road mechanic who later discovered this and even told him that the Carisma shares the same parts with the Volvo s40, my friend had to change his fly wheel to that of the S40 and was able to use the clutch plate of the s40 on hid Carisma. You can see that the road mechanic through his trial by error learns better than the guy at the dealership, he is open to new ideas and ways of doing things. Where do you think the idea of engine and transmission conversions come from the road side mechanics. The average Nigerian motorist will tell you that the road side mechanic is a necessity , there are certain brand of vehicles that tou wont see any dealership in Nigeria repairing because they only focus on popular common brands like Toyota, Honda, KIA . If the model you have is more than 5 years old you wont get any support from the dealership, you will rather be coaxed into replacing it with a new model as it profits them more. So my friend the road side mechanic is still very relevant, some of them are graduates of mechanical engineering and can fix any brand of vehicle I know many of them , the problem is most car owners dont like to shell out money to do complete repairs on their vehicles. They like to play cheap when it comes to repairs, too bad. 7 Likes |

Hmmm. I think it all depends on what level of repairs you need to have done on your car. Changing an alternator belt doesn't necessarily require much skills if you know how its done but having to diagnose a severe engine malfunction could be serious headache for any technician that does not have the right equipment and technical knowledge. In my experience here in Nigeria, I have discovered that most roadside mechanics don't even have the foggiest idea about the basic operational principles of the Internal Combustion Engine. They simply work from experiences of watching the trial and error methods of their masters in the hope that the problem would be solved mysteriously. They remove and plug back sockets or connections to sensors critical in the engines operation and hope that something amiss is discovered or resolved. This would inadvertently trigger many more fault codes on the computerized Engine Control Module (ECU/ECM). They employ the most unorthodox methods of problem solving through rudimentary and archaic forms and they don't have the basic car diagnostics OBD scanners to ascertain or resolve the issues. They have few tools (Often worn out or crudely modified. I.e hammers made out of connecting rods or CV joints) and very little or no intellectual knowledge of the modern cars and its operations combined with the complex electronic modules associated with it. They are prone to being careless and in a hurry to collect your hard earned cash and have all the explanations in the book to justify their actions if any damage results. You may be risking collateral damages if your car is handled by a quack regardless of Roadside, Autoshop or Main dealer. Best rule is to get very good testimonials from those who have experienced the workmanship as it may relate to your car issue but I personally wont take my expensive 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged to any road side mechanic o. |
Re: Road Side Mechanic Vs Auto Workshop Vs Dealership by seyiojomu(m): 8:28am On Oct 17, 2016 |
the truth is, as a driver or car owner, you need to know a lot yourself about the possible technical problems, learn unusual sounds, etc when you know your car very well, you will be able to diagnose to some extent damages. this will help you when you are relating with your roadside, auto workshop or dealership, rather than relying on their own judgement every time. I personally will always patronize auto workshops instead of visiting the dealership or roadside, Roadside mechanics don't feel comfortable with you when you act like you know and will reluctantly prefer to fix while you are watching. dealerships on the other hand will over charge you, probably refine some few roadside mechanics to work on your car, they also will not give you the opportunity to watch your car while it is being repaired in most circumstances. Auto workshops will listen to your complaints, will troubleshoot with you, will advise you on parts, will allow you watch the repair as its been carried out, will not mind if you bring your own parts to be used, most of all, they will always take responsibility if you return the job if problem persists, they are not necessarily cheap but usually negotiable on labor. They will even many times return the bad parts for you to see if you are in doubts. what is most important anyway is that you should always have a clue on what is wrong with your car and the internet will always come in handy with a lot of forums this days on various models of cars. 2 Likes |

seyiojomu:Do you go to auto workshops/dealerships and supervise/watch the technician fix your car and also start forming ITK? If No, why would you try it with roadside mechanics? If yes, Na your type dey always enter problem when you try it with auto technicians and they'll do damages. Pls, tell them what to do, give them room to do their works, then you can inspect the competence of the work done after your car has been operated upon. You won't like it when a client starts supervising and directing you in your own professional job, so don't do it to others. |
