I am a 27 year old lady, the first born from a family of 5 (2 sisters and 2 brothers). I have a 16 year old brother who is getting out of control (Literally), He has been a source of great concern and heart break to my parents. Where do i even start from? is it the fact that i have caught him watching porn on my sister's phone, plays Naira bet (Baba Ijebu) with his feeding allowance, makes away with people's money, comes home very late at night, mingles with touts in the street and has even brought a girl home to have sex with. He lies to the core even when caught doing something bad, He does not respect anyone, talks like a tout, talks to my mom anyhow, etc.

He is just in SS3, about to finish secondary school (He attends a private school in Lagos - day student), but the list of atrocities being committed by him is endless, we have tried to advise him every now and then but he never listens. I would admit that part of the reason he got out of control is because my parents are usually not home early because of the nature of their business so they get home pretty late, i equally work with a Bank with no specific closing time.

The last straw that broke the CAMEL's back was an incident that occurred yesterday; my mom gave him N21k to go and keep at home (to avoid being misplaced at the shop), a few minutes later, one of my mom's relation (Ifeanyi) came to the shop and narrated that he saw my younger brother being dragged by 4 touts, he stopped to challenge them to ask where they were taking my brother to, the reply ifeanyi got was 2 hot slaps on his cheeks whilst a gun was pointed at him, telling him to run along else his life is in danger whilst they made away with my brother - to an unknown destination, the guy (Ifeanyi) ran for his life and came to report the incident to my mom.

I had just come back from the office and decided to stop by at the shop only to hear about the incident, i became so weak and restless and afraid for my little brother, my only prayer to God was "please let this touts spare my brother's life wherever they have taken him to". my mom ran off and left the shop in my care to make a police statement, i just sat in the shop thinking of what i could have done better to make my brother change for good.

To cut the long story short, he later came back home yesterday night around past 11pm, with razor blade cuts behind his back, my sister's husband (who accompanied my mom to make the police report) said that the razor cuts looked like initiation marks, and that he suspects that my brother has just been initiated into a cult... my small brother!!? why? why me? i became numb to the core, i felt my soul leaving my body.. my 16 year old brother a cultist? no! i wont allow it.

I have been lost in great thoughts since today, thinking of how to get him get him out of the area - out of Lagos because i fear for my brother's life and what he might end up becoming in the next few years (God forbid),and the only way i think he might change is with a change of environment. The only thing i can think of right now is shipping him to a boarding school outside Lagos where he would become calm and forget this useless life he is living, before he becomes worse, i don't mind borrowing money to secure him an admission in a boarding school just to ensure he leaves this environment.

please nairalanders what do you suggest i do because this is way way more than i can handle.

Its obvious your brother doesnt have that voice of reason or fear of parents so what he needs now is "Iron hand". I have a 17years old cousin that developed similar behaviour about two years ago, after i gave him the "baracuda" treatment he became as calm as an altar boy. The "baracuda" treatment is simply reconfiguring his mindset with "better" beating and training, if you have any friend or family in the military you can consult them, dont just relocate him or else you will just be giving him the freedom he so much desires.........

Ps- I know a lot of people will give you the "church advice" but even the bible says "If the foundation is faulty...........", your brother doesnt have a spiritual problem, he has a discipline problem......

It is not enough to ship him off to a boarding school, I think he needs a foster home with a disciplinarian far away from the city you reside in. A scholar with military background will do. That will be like his reprimand home. Silly children playing adults with their young lives, if only they know!

Changing his residence is never a better solution.his type are everywhere.if he is bold enough to commit such attrocities at age 16 then,change of environment cant stop him from continuing...such a type will not even listen to advise untill he learns a life lesson...i wanted to say "let him be" but he may never change if you do so...i dont even know what to say in this case.just pray for him because change cant be enforced on a criminal through discipline

changing his environment is not the only solution, you need to take him to the police station so that he can point at the people that initiated him, then send him out of lagos. If you don't do all these be rest assured that his days are numbered because the rate at which all these cult guys are killing eachother is crazy.

the kind of family I have, I don't know how they do it, they'll just drain this stupid behavior out of you. most of the time children that turn out like this are the ones parent fail to correct when they were young, they'll keep saying leave am na small pikin forgetting that na small pikin dey grow.
