Did you know there are only three countries left in the world to eradicate Polio? This is due to global vaccination efforts. How much do you know about Polio? Check out these FAQs and Vaccination Information:

Who is affected?
Mostly children under 5 years of age.

Can you die of polio?
(no cure except vaccination):1 in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis. Among those paralysed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilized. (WHO)

Is polio easy to catch?
«Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children. The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the fecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and can cause paralysis.»- World Health Organization (WHO)

Polio prevention: Vaccination, the best prevention!

The best way to prevent polio is to get vaccinated.
Children should get polio shots according to the vaccination schedule presented by the CDC Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

«Endemic transmission is continuing in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Failure to stop polio in these last remaining areas could result in as many as 200 000 new cases every year, within 10 years, all over the world.» - WHO
in Nigeria new cases have been seen in the north east region where there is more cases of polio.

Polio eradication/timeline:

In 1988, the forty-first World Health Assembly adopted a resolution for the worldwide eradication of polio.
In 1994, the WHO Region of the Americas declared polio-free
2000: WHO Western Pacific Region declared polio-free
June 2002: WHO European Region declared polio-free
March 2014: WHO South-East Asia Region declared polio-free
«Polio cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases then, to 74 reported cases in 2015. The reduction is the result of the global effort to eradicate the disease. »- WHO
