I am sure you know someone is currently sneezing, coughing or has a running nose, well the flu is in the air. This time of the year is flu season and everyone is at risk of catching it. The flu is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus. The symptoms can either be mild or severe. The symptoms include fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache, coughing and feeling tired. The symptoms can begin two days after exposure to the virus and can last a week, but a cough may last longer. So literally you'll be feeling miserable for at least one week.

We know the flu is infectious and can take down an entire family fast, so how can we stay healthy during the cold and flu season or at least minimize the downtime if we don't.

Here are 10 ways we can stay healthy and vibrant throughout this season.

1. Wash your hands
A lot of found it really annoying when we were told we had to wash our hand before we put food in our mouth. Well, we should definitely listen to that advice if we want to avoid catching the flu. Washing your hands is the best way to keep from catching a cold. To prevent germ, we need to wash our hands. Always carry a hand sanitizer around in cases where you don't have access to soap and water.
Try to wash your hands throughout the day, and always after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. If someone sneezes or coughs close to you, break out your hand sanitizer.

2. Get enough sleep
Sufficient sleep is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Getting the right amount of sleep is another way to fend off the flu. You body need to rest, so as to fight the virus. Try to stay on a regular schedule, and sleep at the same time every night.

3. Reduce stress
Chronic stress not only affects your mood, it also lowers your immune system. Feeling stressed all the time puts you at risk for cold and the flu. Chill out for at least 30 minutes every day. This not only good for your mood but also your health.

4. Exercise
Exercise is another way you can prevent catching the flu. Exercise can boost your immune function, which may keep you from getting sick. It can also help you manage stress. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. You can also take a walk for the same amount of time every day.

5. Eat healthy

Eating a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables keeps your body feeling good and fighting off infections. We should fill up on vegetables that are rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids to prevent the flu.
