Everyone dream of being rich, however, not all can rise to that position talk less of enjoying the royalty of being called the richest. Coincidentally, just as many are getting poorer, some people are getting richer and there is no sign of them slowing down.

The list of Africa's Richest in 2016 as released by Forbes shows a decline in the number of African billionaires to 24 in contrast to the 28 billionaires featured on the list in 2015. This post is however not meant to discuss all African billionaires but to show the top 10 richest on the continent. The Top 10 Richest Africans in 2016 list shows a combined wealth of $62.4 billion shared among them. The names, nationality, net worth, and source of wealth of these mega rich individuals are discussed in a descending order.

10. Naguib Sawiris, Egyptian

Net Worth: $3.1 billion

Source of Wealth: Telecom

Born on the 17th of June, 1954, Naguib Sawiris is an Egyptian billionaire business mogul. He owns and head Orascon Telecom Media and Technology Holdings S.A.E. Both entities are under Weather Investments. These telecom companies are his source of wealth. He has an estimated net worth of $3.1 billion, enough to make him the 10th richest in Africa, 2nd in Egypt and 569th richest in the world.

Sawiris holds a Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Science degrees from the prestigious Swiss Federal Polytechnical Institute and a diploma from German Evangelical School, Cairo, Egypt. He is happily married to Ghada Gamil and they are blessed with four children.

9. Issad Redrab, Algerian

Net Worth: $3.2 billion

Source of Wealth: Food, Self-made

Born on May 27, 1944 in Tagumount-Azzouz village in Tizi Ouzou region of Algeria, Issad Redrab is Algeria's richest man, 9th in Africa and occupies 549th spot in the world with a net worth of $3.2 billion. He is a self-made billionaire with interest in steel, food, agribusiness, and electronics.

He owns the largest private conglomerate in Algeria and also has one of the biggest sugar refineries in the world with a production output of about 1.5 million tons per annum. He is happily married and blessed with five children.

8. Isabel Dos Santos, Angolan

Net Worth: $3.3 billion

Source of Wealth: Investments

Occupying the 8th spot is Isabel Dos Santos, the eldest daughter of Angola's longest serving president, President Jose Eduardo. She was born on the 20th of April, 1973 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

According to Forbes in 2013, her net worth reached over $3 billion, making her the first billionaire woman in Africa. She holds interest in several prestigious companies which include but are not limited to telecom, hospitality, trucking among many others.

She graduated from King's College, London with a major in Electrical Engineering. She is married to Sundika Dakolo and blessed with three children. According to reports that made round on the internet, the wedding gulped a whooping sum of $4 million with a special choir invited from Belgium and also, the food served was reportedly brought in with two chartered planes from France.

7. Nathan Kirsch, Swazi

Net Worth: $4 billion

Source of Wealth: Retail, Real Estate, Self-made

Ranked 421 in the world, 1 in his native country Swaziland, and 7th in Africa with a net worth of $4 billion is Swaziland's self-made billionaire, Nathan Kirsch. At 84, Kirsch is one of the oldest billionaires on the planet. He is married to Frances Herr, both are blessed with three children.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree from University of Witwersrand and a honourary Doctor of Law at the University of Swaziland. Although he is a Swazi, Kirsch resides in the UK where he enjoys permanent residency status. He also has such privilege in the US.


6. Nassef Sawiris, Egyptian

Net Worth: $5.5 billion

Nassef Sawiris is the richest Egyptian alive, 6th in Africa and 421st in the world which he amassed through his construction and chemical producing companies. He is the younger brother of Africa's 10th richest man, Naguib Sawiris. He is the CEO of Orascon construction industries. He obtained a B.Sc. in Economics. He is happily married with four children.


5. Johann Rupert, South African

Net Worth: $5.6 billion

Source of Wealth: Luxury Goods

On the 5th spot of Africa's richest is Johann Rupert with an estimated wealth of $5.6 billion, amassed through dealings in luxury consumer goods. He is also the third richest man in South Africa behind Christoffel Wiese and Nicky Oppenheimer, both occupying the fourth and third positions respectively. He was born on 1 June 1950 to South Africa's business mogul, Anton Rupert.


4. Christoffel Wiese

Net Worth: $6.1 billion

Source of Wealth: Consumer Retail, Self-made

Chrsitoffel Riese is South Africa's king of retailing. He owns South Africa's retail giant, Shoprite, a mega buster company which started with a chain of eight stores spread across the Southern Africa country. With a net worth of $6.1 billion, he is South Africa's second richest man and 214th in the world. He was born 10th Sept, 1940. He is a lawyer. He graduated with LLB and BA at Stellenbosch University where he presently serve as Chancellor.

3. Nicky Oppenheimer

Net Worth: $6.7 billion

Source of Wealth: Diamonds

Although Nicky Oppenheimer is no longer in active business, this however does not stop him from ranking among Africa's top super rich. With his net worth estimated to be in the region of $6.7 billion, he is South Africa's richest man and 174th in the world.

In 2012, Nicky sold his 40% stake in South Africa's diamond trading giant, DeBeer (a company where his family owns 85% stake) at a fixed price of $5.1 billion in cash. He was born on 8th June 1945. He is married and blessed with a son.

2. Mike Adenuga

Net Worth: $10 billion

Source of Wealth: Telecom, Real Estate, Oil

Born on 2 April 1953 to Chief Micheal Agbolade Adenuga and Chief (Mrs) Juliana Oyindamola Adenuga in Ijebu, South-Western Nigeria, Mike Adenuga rose from low life to Africa's second richest man in 2016 through visionary and innovative business ventures. Now worth $10 billion, Adenuga is also the second richest man in Nigeria behind Aliko Dangote and also ranked 103rd richest in the world. He owns and head Nigeria's second largest telecommunication company, Globacom. His telecom company owns stakes in Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin Republic. Apart from his telecom business, Adenuga owns stakes in Equatorial Trust Bank, a Nigerian commercial bank. His oil exploration company, Conoil, owns 6 oil blocks in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

Mike Adenuga sponsored himself through school in the US by driving taxi. He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Pace University where he bagged degrees in Business Administration. He is married and blessed with seven children.

With a net worth of over $14.4 billion, Aliko Dangote is the founder and CEO of Dangote group, Nigeria's biggest conglomerate which is into cement, sugar, and flour production; and recently, the company launched scale business projection in the oil sector by constructing (ongoing) the biggest oil and petrochemical refineries in the world in Lekki free trade zone, Lagos, Nigeria.

For three consecutive years, Dangote has not only been the richest man in Africa but the richest black man in the world.He is the 51st richest man in the world. He is married and has three children.
