Every week, hundreds of Android apps and games are submitted to the Play Store. If you’re not paying attention 24/7, it’s easy to miss some of the best stuff. Each week I will highlight five of the best new or overlooked apps and games. You’re sure to find some hidden gems in these recommendations. Go forth and download!

1. SayIt

Audiobooks have become very popular in recent years. SayIt is an app that brings the audio-book experience to any text on your phone. All you have to do is find something to read, tap the built-in Android share button, and select SayIt from the list. The app will immediately start reading the text. You can then stop, pause, or change the language from the notification bar. SayIt can also read from your clipboard.

2. Forest Live Wallpaper

Live wallpapers aren’t as popular as they once were, but Forest Live Wallpaper might change your mind. It features an animated landscape of trees and mountains that reflect the real weather conditions from your area. The clouds, rain, snow, and wind can all change depending on the weather. The color also changes to match the time of day. It’s like your own little virtual environment that exists on your home screen.

3. Hangar

Hangar is an app that puts your favorite and most used apps in your notification shade. By default, the Hangar bar shows your most used apps, but you can also pin your favorite apps to the front of the list. Conversely, you can hide specific apps from ever showing in the bar. Hangar supports icon packs so the bar can look just as good as your home screen. Hangar also keeps track of app usage statistics.

4. Shootout in Mushroom Land

Shootout in Mushroom Land is easiest described as Mario with guns. The gameplay and design looks a lot like the classic Mario platformers, but with a few twists. Your character can be equipped with guns, helmets, grenades, and jetpacks. The goal is to make it through levels and collect map pieces. You’ve never seen this much blood in a Mario game.

5. Halfpipe Hero

Halfpipe Hero is an arcade style skateboarding game. You play as a skateboarder going ham on a halfpipe. Tap when the board is vertical to land, tap to grind, or tap to do tricks. Everything you do requires just one finger. The longer you go without falling the higher your score will be. Halfpipe Hero has great retro-inspired graphics and it becomes addictive very quick. See how many tricks you can land on your first try.
