The smartphone market gets even more competitive by the day due to the fact that the number of smartphone users just keeps increasing everyday. This competition makes smartphone makers want to make smartphones with the best features thereby creating the best user experience in order to stay ahead in the smartphone market.

One feature that would enhance user experience is wireless charging. Since most smartphone batteries do not last long, it's always a bit of a hassle to have to charge your phone or tablet every now and then. Wireless charging was pursued so users could charge their phones but also have the freedom to move about at the same time.

What is wireless charging and how does it work?
Wireless charging is also known as inductive charging. The makers of wireless chargers use the principle of electromagnetic induction. This involves the use of an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects.

Here is how your phone gets charged
To charge a phone without connecting directly via a cable, the base station (charging plate) is first of all connected to a power source before the phone is placed on it. So what happens in-between? Coils of wire in the base station (the charging plate) create an electromagnetic field as the current passes through (recall that the base station is first connected to a source of power). The coils of wire (induction coil) in the battery charging circuit of the device can derive electron flow from the field and the current produced is used to charge the phone.

Even though wireless charging is very good for our devices, it is advisable to cold boot your phone with a direct cable connection. Technology gets better each passing day. But are we ever going to see wireless charging without the short distance limit or perhaps one in which our phones can still charge at a long distance?
