Private universities like CU have been under serious attack since inception and will not be given a chance. It is used to be like that with private secondary school till it became popular. Check trends of University Ranking before you compare your school to a private Uni. See for yourself why you might have been wrong:

1. Employment Rate
In case you have met an unemployed CU grad please put it as a comment. There is a quality of education in CU that government school products can't understand because they didn't experiencing it.
2. University Ranking. I am giving you a personal assignment check the latest ranking of CU on webometrics for Nigerian University
3. Student to Infrastructure
Some federal schools might have better infrastructure but common have you seen pictures of 1000 students in a 500 capacity hall for lectures.
4. Industrial Link
5. Quality of Alumni
Goto the top companies in Nigeria(Shell, MTN, GTB, IBM, Accenture, McKinsey, PWC, KPMG)you will find CU, Babcock products there.
