It is hard to be mentally tough when your mental strength is tested every day. This might be because of a toxic friend or colleague, your job or maybe a struggling relationship. Whatever the situation is, you have to be mentally strong.

Mental strength has to do with seeing opportunities and taking action when things look bleak. It’s hard to be mentally tough, especially when you feel stuck. The ability to break the mould and take a bold new direction requires that extra grit, daring, and spunk that only the mentally toughest people have.

If you've met mentally strong people you'll notice how they manage to set themselves apart from the crowd. Where others see impenetrable barriers, they see challenges to overcome. Take the example of Thomas Edison. When his factory got burned down in 1914, destroying one-of-a-kind prototypes and causing $23 million in damage, Edison’s response was simple:
Thank goodness all our mistakes were burned up. Now we can start fresh again.
Mr Edison's response showed that he was mentally strong to see the positive side of the horrible incident that occurred. Mental strength is as rare as it is important. The good news is that any of us can get stronger with a little extra focus and effort. Let's look at 13 habits of mentally strong people.

1. They are confident

Whether you think you can, or think you can’t—you’re right. – Henry Ford

Your mentality has a powerful effect on your ability to succeed. A friend of mine always says "if you doubt it, it won't succeed." This means if you are doubtful about a business plan or a decision, there is a high probability it won't succeed. True confidence will inspire you and others, not the false confidence people project to mask their insecurities.

2. Their emotions are always in check

You cannot be mentally tough without the ability to fully understand and tolerate strong negative emotions and also control your emotions when dealing with toxic people. When they need to confront a toxic person, they approach the situation rationally. They identify their emotions and don’t allow anger or frustration for fueling the chaos. You should be able to do something productive with your negative emotions.

3. They embrace change

You need to be flexible and adapting. The fear of change is a threat to your success and happiness. You should not only embrace change, you should have a plan when it happens and also find the positive in it.

4. They don't waste their time and energy on things they can't control

Mentally strong people do complain about things they can't control, instead, they focus on what they can control in their lives. They recognise that sometimes, the only thing they can control is their attitude.

5. They don’t try to please everyone

Mentally strong people know that they can't please everyone. They’re not afraid to say no or speak up when necessary. They strive to be kind and fair but can handle other people being upset if they didn’t make them happy.

6. They don't dwell on the past

Mentally strong people don't waste their time dwelling on the past, they acknowledge their past and see what they can learn from it. They live for the present and plan for the future.

7. They don't make the same mistake over and over

Mentally strong people learn from their mistakes and don't make those mistakes over and over again.
