Symptoms: Passing watery stool is the first sign to look out for no matter the colour of the stool. At times, the feaces may be gelatinous, but brick-red. Note that E. Coli kills piglets within hours of birth if care is not taken. In epidemic situations, piglets should be given gentamycin immediately after birth.

Two causes have often been identified to cause scouring in piglets.

1. E. Coli scour: If piglets start scouring between day one and six of birth, the most possible cause is E. Coli.

Treatment: Gentamycin has been proved to be effective against the disease at 0.2ml per body weight in kg.

2. Coccidiosis Scour: If scouring starts at 7th day of life, coccidiosis should be targeted during treatment.

Treatment: Sulpha drugs like cotrim, sulphadimidine, sulmethrim etc have been proved to be effective against the disease. Use 0.3ml per body weight in kg. Sulphamezathine solution is the best I have ever seen, but the drug is not always available.

For stooling of all etiology in piglets, use methozasole in water, especially at weaning, whether the weaners scour or not. Such control measure will ensure the weaners don't lose much electrolyte before the situation is remedied.

Lactose ringer or replensol should be given to stooling piglets to replace fluid loss.
