Kitchen sink is one of the most used plumbing fixtures in most homes. They come in different texture like granite, stainless, ceramic, plastic, marble, glass and designs like double bowl, single tray-single bow, double bowl-single tray, double bowl-double tray, etc and usually have tap fitted on them to produce water. If debris like hair, grease or solid objects enter the drain pipe, it could cause blockage along the drain line and prevent water from flowing freely, resulting to the accumulation of dirt, germs, and odor on the surface or bowl of your kitchen sink. Whenever you have a clogged drain, here are the hands-on steps to take to clean it up.

1. Plunger: This is usually the first point of call whenever there is a clogged drain. Use this device to remove any blockade in the drain pipe.

First, you need to fill your sink bowl partially with water about 1/4 or 1/2 full. Ensure adjoining drains are sealed if you have a double drain sink then put the plunger suction cup on the drain opening and apply force to push and pull using both hands, do this repeatedly until the water in the drain starts flowing. If it does not unclog your drain sink, then the blockage is more complex than what a plunger can do. You can try out the next solution.

2. Baking soda and Vinegar: You need to empty the sink bowl if it is filled with water due to the clog using a cup to bail the water. Pour one cup of baking soda into the drain opening using a spatula, then pour one cup of vinegar and use the stopper or plug to block the drain. Allow the mixture to work for like five minutes then pour three cups of hot water down the drain. If it is still blocked, run the baking soda and vinegar process again.

3. Plumbers snake (AKA Auger Cable): This is a slender, flexible tool that is best used when neither plunger nor baking soda and vinegar prove effective, this is because it dislodges clogs farther down the drain pipe by directly muscling its way against any obstruction along the drain pipe until it breaks into smaller particles or hooks it round the auger’s head.

Keep a bucket ready to catch any stray water, detach the trap under the sink, empty left over water in the trap into the bucket, clean the trap and remove any waste in it. Then remove the horizontal pipe that connects the trap to the wall, insert and push your auger into the stub pipe in a clockwise direction until it meets an object, then start turning the handle anti-clockwise as soon as it catches the clog and slowly pull it out. This should probably clean your drain. Re-attach the horizontal pipe and trap. Then run hot water down the drain to remove any left-over clog.

If after applying some of the tips outlined above and the problem persists, please contact a professional plumber.
