Africa's Best World Cup Team? by Jarus(m): 3:22pm On Nov 07, 2009
We had this debate in another forum(Bigsoccer) a couple of years ago before I became active of NL.
Now, to the NL sports analysts, which is Africa's best team in past world cups?

NOMINEES:(In no order)
1, Nigeria @ USA 94: : This team shook the whole world in the 1994 world cup. Spanking Greece and Bulgaria that eventually finished 4th, and coming top of a group that had defending runners-up, Argentina. The team had 3 minutes left from clinching quarter final ticket before Roberto Baggio killed their dreams. Their entertaining and attacking football was a delight to watch.

2, Cameroun @ Italia 90: Led by ageless Roger Milla, the Indomitable lions dazzled at Italia 90, beating Argentina with nine men. The first African team to make WC quarter finals and England had to rely on penalty to send them packing. A very great performance.

3, Senegal @ Korea/Japan 2002: A team composed mainly of France-based players, the Teranga Lions of Senegal had a very impressive display at the 2002 mundial and the highlight was beating defending champions, France 1-0 at the opening game. With players full of skills and agility, the world cup first-timers, inspired by skilful El-Hadji Diouf and having key players like Khalilou Fadiga, Henry Camara, Salif Diao and keeper Tony Silva, became the second African team to reach quarter finals of WC after beating Sweden, thanks to two wonder strikes from Henri Camara, but submitted to the superior firepowers of the Turkish in the Q/F.

4, Ghana @ Germany 2006: After playing WC only in their dreams for over 40 years, the Black Stars soon got the opportunity to show the world what they can in Germany 2006. The Black Stars gave a good account of themselves in Germany 2006, and were the only African team that sailed to the second round. The highlight of their presence included beating highly rated New Zealand and giving heavy weights like Italy and Brazil a run for their money, even though absence of a complete striker told on their team. A great WC from the Black stars.

5, CIV @ Germany 2006: They may not have made it to the second round, but Germany 2006 was not a bad tournament for the CIV team that had no previous experience in WC. In a group of death that had the Orange boys and the Argies, the Elephants gave a good account of themselves against both star-studded teams before losing 2-1 in each.

6. Nigeria @ France 98 : But for the ridiculous loss to underrated Denmark in the second round, signaled by an earlier but overlooked loss to Paraguay, that overshadowed an otherwise brilliance display, this team cannot also be pushed aside. The team may not be in the class of 1994 set, but topping a group in a WC is no mean feat. The highlight of their appearance was the defeat over star-studded Spain.

7, Morocco @ France 98: The Moroccans also did not fare bad in France. But for Brazil's controversial loss to Norway in the last game of the group, this team would have made it tp the second round. An impressive performance from the North africans.

Now, over to you. Which is Africa's best performers at the World Cup? Can we have you list of Top 5?

Let the debate begin. . .
